Tropic do a FULL range of Sun Care products. We have 2 options:

☀️ Great Barrier, for normal skin

☀️🧴 Sunscreen: chemicals, SPF & what actually matters

It’s worth being clear up front: SPF is important for protecting your skin, and the risks from unprotected sun (burn, premature ageing, and skin cancer) are well-established. The conversations online about “chemicals” can get confusing, so here’s a grounded breakdown.

☀️ What SPF actually means
SPF (Sun Protection Factor) mainly measures protection against UVB rays (the ones that cause sunburn).
SPF 15 ≈ blocks ~93% UVB
SPF 30 ≈ ~97%
SPF 50 ≈ ~98%
👉 No sunscreen blocks 100%
Important: Look for “broad-spectrum” to also protect against UVA (deeper ageing and cancer risk).

🧴 Chemical vs Mineral (Physical) Sunscreens
🌊 “Chemical” filters
Examples:
avobenzone
octocrylene
oxybenzone
They:
absorb UV and convert it to heat
tend to be lighter, more invisible on skin

🌿 Mineral (physical) filters
Examples:
zinc oxide
titanium dioxide
They:
reflect/scatter UV
sit on the skin surface
are often better for sensitive skin

☀️ Why SPF really matters
Regular protection helps prevent:
sunburn
premature ageing (wrinkles, pigmentation)
DNA damage
skin cancers (including melanoma)

✔️ Use SPF daily (especially face)
✔️ Reapply regularly
✔️ Choose a formula you’re comfortable with
✔️ Combine with shade, hats, sunglasses

⚠️ Areas of ongoing research:
Some ingredients (like oxybenzone) have raised questions about:
hormone disruption (mainly in lab/high-dose studies)
environmental impact (e.g. coral reefs)

The risk of not wearing sunscreen is far greater than the potential risk of approved sunscreen ingredients.
