A correctly calibrated humidity instrument is essential to ensure that measurements are reliable – but there is a lot of confusion as to what ‘calibration’ actually is. Contrary to popular belief, it is NOT about adjusting an instrument to read correctly.

Read our latest article ‘What are the types of moisture calibration?’ to discover exactly what is meant by ‘calibration’, why it is so important and the different options that are available.

Moisture or dew point calibration is the process of comparing a measuring instrument against an authoritative reference to identify any bias or systematic error in the readings. The reference instrument in any humidity calibration should be between 4 and 10 times as accurate as the instrument under....

The NPL defines dew point as: ‘The temperature at which dew, or condensation, forms as you cool a gas. Where the condensate is ice, this is known as the frost point.

Unlike other process variables such as temperature, pressure, and flow, moisture has two unique characteristics:

It is difficult to measure accurately since moisture is directly affected by temperature and pressure

Process moisture is often a contaminant and can severely damage processes, equipment and reduce product quality.

Ensuring good air quality in hospitals is key to reducing transmission of airborne diseases. For example:

Virus: rh levels play a role in the survival of viruses and other infectious agents. At a temperature of 21°C, influenza survival is at its lowest, with a mid-range of 40 %–60 %rh. Temperature and relative humidity (rh) will constantly interact to affect the survival of airborne viruses in aerosols.

Bacteria: Carbon monoxide (CO) increased the death rate of bacteria when the relative humidity (rh) was less than 25%, but it protected bacteria when the rh was greater than 90%. Temperatures above roughly 24°C appear to reduce bacterial survival in the air.

When calibrating humidity sensors, simply monitoring the readings of the sensors under test against the set point on the generator is not enough. These generators only use mixing techniques and they cannot produce a definite dew point. To correctly assess the performance of a humidity sensor, you need a reliable, fundamental reference measurement to use as a comparison.

Michell Instruments’ high-precision chilled mirror hygrometers measure a primary characteristic of moisture – the temperature at which condensation forms on a surface. This means that they are inherently repeatable and ideal for calibration laboratories looking to achieve low measurement uncertainties. Read more: https://bit.ly/3CmeFgd

For many industrial trace moisture measurements, dew-point transmitters are the ideal choice. They are low cost, easy to install and robust enough to withstand the tough environments. This includes measuring moisture at line pressure, operating at high ambient temperatures or in hazardous areas. They are mostly used in applications where measuring the water dew point in a gas is crucial to protect equipment or ensure the quality of products. To get the best accuracy from your dew-point transmitter you need to understand how the different types of transmitter work, and how each is suited to specific applications. We cover all this in our latest blog post: How accurate is your dew-point transmitter? Follow the link to find out more. https://bit.ly/3l1shHv

As an inert gas, nitrogen is often used as a blanketing gas to shield highly reactive chemicals from contact with the air or oxygen. It’s also easy to produce nitrogen on-site, using (V)PSA nitrogen generators, close to the area of use to ensure a reliable, continuous supply.

But what are the safety considerations when you are setting up Nitrogen generation near to – or even within – a hazardous area? This is exactly the question we address in our new blog post: ‘Achieving pure nitrogen production on-site safely for hazardous areas’ – read more here. https://www.processsensing.com/en-us/blog/achieving-pure-nitrogen-production-on-site-safely-for-hazardous-areas.htm

Exploding the false assumptions about metal oxide moisture sensors. The manufacturing processes, materials and specifications of metal oxide moisture sensors have improved greatly since they were first introduced in the 1960s.

However, some engineers still believe many of the false assumptions about the technology. Although the original sensors had limitations, modern metal oxide moisture sensors offer real benefits to many applications. Despite this, many users are persuaded to invest in more costly and sometime less-effective moisture measurement technologies for their applications.

In this article, we examine some of the most common false assumptions about metal oxide moisture sensors and explain the facts. https://bit.ly/3t7817K
