Let’s talk about Halloween Costumes 👻👺
This week, many children dress up for Halloween celebrations in school before the midterm break
🎃 Halloween Costumes aren’t for every child – and that’s OK!
For some children, dressing up is one of the most exciting parts of Halloween. For others, it can feel uncomfortable, overwhelming or simply unappealing.
Costumes can bring sensory challenges, including unfamiliar fabrics, itchy seams, masks, face paint or clothing that feels restrictive.
For some children, changes to their usual routine or the expectation to dress up can also cause anxiety.
And some children simply don’t want to dress up. That’s OK too!
This Halloween, let’s remember:
🔶 Dressing up should be a choice, not an expectation.
🔶 Wearing Halloween colours or a favourite T-shirt is just as valid as wearing a costume.
🔶 Children can join in with Halloween activities without dressing up.
🔶 Respecting a child’s sensory preferences and individual needs helps make celebrations more inclusive.
🧡 Halloween should be about having fun, feeling comfortable and being included – NOT about what a child is wearing.
No costume? No problem!
