Appleby House in Epsom, Surrey, is an 'outstanding'-rated, award-winning care home offering an innovative approach to older people's care, including dementia care. Residents are supported to lead an independent, active and fulfilling life, with opportunities to enjoy hobbies, and discover new interests. Art sessions have transformed the home and led to inspirational outcomes for residents – Appleby House even has its own art gallery and studio now. The team strives to enhance the home in every way for residents. The traditional hair salon now has a nail bar and barber area, and an ice cream parlour was added to improve residents’ nutrition. Residents are encouraged to express their views and wishes, and individuality is celebrated.

Oh, We Do Love to Be Beside the Seaside!

Making the most of a beautiful autumn day, we decided on an impromptu trip to the seaside with some of our lovely residents.

With the sun shining, we soaked up the wonderful sights, sounds and smells of the coast, enjoying the fresh sea air, the sand and the calming sound of the waves.

Of course, no seaside trip would be complete without some delicious fish and chips, which went down an absolute treat!

And the fun didn’t stop there! With singing and laughter all the way there and back, the journey was just as enjoyable as the destination.

A truly wonderful day filled with smiles, friendship, happy memories and the simple pleasures in life. These are the moments we treasure most here at Appleby House.

Macmillan Coffee Morning at Appleby House

We had a wonderful morning welcoming residents, families and team members to join us for our Macmillan Coffee Morning, raising money for an incredibly important cause.

There was a lovely atmosphere as everyone enjoyed tea, coffee, delicious cakes and plenty of conversation and laughter. It was especially nice to see families joining us and spending quality time together while supporting Macmillan Cancer Support.

A huge thank you to everyone who came along, donated, bought a cake and helped make the morning such a success. Every contribution, big or small, helps Macmillan continue the amazing support they provide to people and families affected by cancer.

A lovely morning of togetherness, kindness and community!

What an afternoon!

The fantastic Richard Harvey was back at Appleby House, bringing his usual energy, enthusiasm and plenty of fun!

Our residents had a wonderful time singing along to familiar favourites, clapping to the music and sharing lots of smiles and laughter along the way.

There’s nothing quite like live music to lift the spirits and bring everyone together, and Richard certainly did just that!

Thank you, Richard, for another fabulous afternoon — we’re already looking forward to the next one!

Autumn has arrived at Appleby House!

We’ve been embracing all the beautiful colours of the season and bringing a little bit of autumn magic into our home.

Our residents have been busy getting creative with seasonal crafts and helping us fill the home with lovely autumn displays, from colourful leaves and pumpkins to warm, cosy decorations.

There’s something special about this time of year — the changing colours, the crisp air and all those familiar autumn sights that can spark wonderful memories and conversations.

We’ve loved seeing our home transformed for the season, and even more importantly, seeing everyone enjoying making, decorating and celebrating autumn together.

Our Beautiful New Sensory Room

We are so happy to share our newly designed sensory room at Appleby House.

With guidance from a sensory room specialist, we wanted to create a space that feels calm, peaceful and comforting for our residents. We have kept the room simple, soft and mainly one colour, helping to avoid too much visual stimulation and making the whole space feel gentle and relaxing.

The real focus of the room is our beautiful projection imagery, with calming scenes from nature accompanied by soft music. These gentle sights and sounds help create a lovely atmosphere where residents can relax, enjoy quiet one-to-one time and simply take in the moment.

The room will be a really special addition to our Namaste programme, helping us create meaningful sensory experiences through music, touch, light, nature and connection.

We are absolutely delighted with how it has come together and are looking forward to seeing the room filled with lots of calm, comforting and meaningful moments.

What a wonderful afternoon at Appleby House!

Yesterday we celebrated our Taste of Home BBQ with delicious food, sunshine, music and lots of smiles.

Families joined their loved ones for a colourful afternoon of fun, with children’s games and fantastic live entertainment from our lovely regular Malindi from MACK Entertainment. Residents were singing, dancing and making the most of the beautiful weather!

Creativity is thriving at Appleby House!

At Appleby House, we’re incredibly proud of our award-winning arts programme, and we’re delighted to welcome the wonderful Emily Chilvers, who now visits us every two weeks to lead our pottery sessions.

Our residents have been creating beautiful bowls and coasters using lavender, flowers and leaves to bring the beauty of the outdoors into their artwork. As well as being great fun, pottery encourages creativity, supports dexterity and coordination, and provides a wonderfully calming and mindful experience.

A huge thank you to Emily for sharing her talent and inspiring our residents. We can’t wait to see what we’ll create together next!

What perfect weather we had today! We made the most of it by spending the whole day in the garden.
Our morning was filled with painting, puzzles and plenty of friendly chatter over coffee and cakes. In the afternoon, we enjoyed a lovely Poetry Corner session, sharing some of our favourite poems before creating our very own poem inspired by childhood memories of summertime.
A truly wonderful day of sunshine, creativity and happy memories!
