🖐️ Why Dissection Can Be a Game-Changer for Hands-On Therapists

For therapists who learn best by doing rather than simply reading or watching, dissection offers a uniquely powerful way to understand anatomy.

Many manual therapists, massage therapists, osteopaths, physiotherapists, and bodyworkers have a strong kinesthetic learning style. They develop their understanding through touch, movement, and direct experience. While textbooks, apps, and diagrams are valuable, there’s something profoundly different about seeing and feeling the real structures of the human body.

Dissection allows you to explore the layers of tissue, trace muscles from origin to insertion, follow nerves and blood vessels through their actual pathways, and appreciate the three-dimensional relationships that can be difficult to grasp from a page or screen.

For hands-on practitioners, this experience often creates a deeper and more lasting understanding of anatomy, one that translates directly into assessment, treatment, and clinical reasoning. It always enhances palpation skills by giving greater context to what lies beneath the skin - this is one of the greatest gifts that comes from the dissection experience with us.

When you can see it, touch it, and explore it for yourself, anatomy relations stop being a collection of facts and becomes a living map of the body.

This is what makes our dissection labs different to most - taking it back into real life!

Every morning before- and every afternoon after the dissection lab, we spend time in our lecture room.
Discussing what we’ve discovered and experienced in the lab, transferring that knowledge into movement, movement patterns, and real life!

Our attendees feedback has been unanimous - “practice changing”!

JOIN US THIS NOVEMBER!

When you come to join us on one of our dissection courses we meet you in Berlin. We give you a private tour of the BODYWORLDS finishing with FR:EIA, an exhibition piece we both have a close connection to as we were team members who designed and dissected her! We then journey together to the PLASTINARIUM…

Thank you IDA ROLF.
This year marks what would have been Ida Rolf’s 130th birthday—one of the pioneers of modern fascia-based bodywork and movement science.

She coined the term Structural Integration to describe her method of working with connective tissue to improve the body’s relationship with gravity, bringing change through the fascial, muscular, and nervous systems. In doing so, she also recognised shifts in how a person relates to themselves and the world.

As Dr Carol Davis once said:

“There’s something about those Structural Integration folk. They see and understand the body and person in a whole different way.”

True integration is hard to understand without experiencing it. It unfolds through the full Rolfing process, through training, and through years of practice. It is never a one-time event.

Many say, “I was Rolfed once,” but lasting change is rarely that simple. It asks for participation, awareness, and ongoing practice.

After nearly 30 years in Structural Integration, alongside craniosacral work, Shiatsu, movement, martial arts, and Scaravelli-inspired yoga, I’ve found that movement practices sustained over time are what deepen and hold the changes.

Ida Rolf drew from yoga, osteopathy, chiropractic, homeopathy, and the Alexander Technique, shaping her work in the 1940s–50s. With the founding of the Rolf Institute in 1971, her work became known as Rolfing Structural Integration.

One key lesson remains: this work is not done to someone. The tissues guide the process. We listen, follow, and respond. In many ways, the client does the work.

It takes decades to refine this craft.

You can be technically skilled.
You can be knowledgeable.
You can be clever.

But do you have the hands?

Thank you, Ida, for your legacy—and for reminding us that touch is both art and discipline.
Gary
