What does being a carer really mean?
A carer is so much more than just a noun.
It’s being an emotional support.
A medication reminder.
A meal maker.
A driver.
A listener.
An organiser.
A constant source of care, often behind the scenes.
This Carers Week, we’re recognising the many roles carers take on every single day to support loved ones living with MS, neurological and other long-term conditions.
Because caring isn’t just one thing, it’s everything.
💬 Is there anything you would add to this list? We’d love to hear from you.

💙 You’re not alone. Our Carers Group offers a friendly, supportive space to connect with others who understand.

Calling all carers in this carers week
We see you. đź’™

We’re shining a light on the incredible people who often go unseen, but who are absolutely appreciated!

Every day, carers provide vital support to loved ones living with MS, neurological and other long-term conditions.

For those who are lucky enough to have the support of family and friends, who help with appointments and therapies, offer encouragement and more, and are there through every challenge… the positive impact of your care and support is immeasurable.

Caring for someone can be demanding, and carers need support too. At the centre we provide space for people to come together, share experiences, and support one another at our carers group.

Building carer-friendly communities is so important. This is why spaces and organisations like ours matter. As well as therapies, we offer connection, understanding, and a sense of community for everyone involved.

This week, if you know someone who is a carer, take a moment to say thank you. A small gesture of recognition can mean the world.

If you’d like to find out more about the support available at our centre, for individuals and carers, we’d love to hear from you.

Get in touch with the friendly team to find out more via our website, email [email protected] or telephone 01392 447411.

Take Part in MS Research
Help Us Co-Design a New Support Tool for Managing Bowel Symptoms
We are inviting adults living with Multiple Sclerosis and carers who support someone with MS to take part in a research study exploring experiences of bowel symptoms and how support could be improved.
Who Can Take Part?
âś… Adults aged 18+
âś… Diagnosed with MS (any subtype) for at least 6 months
âś… Experiencing (now or in the past) bowel symptoms such as constipation, urgency, or leakage
âś… Carers whose family member/friend with MS meets these criteria
This study is open to people across the UK because all sessions take place online.
What Does the Study Involve?
• A one-to-one online interview (90–120 minutes)
• Optional video recording (audio-only available)
• Online feedback workshops to discuss experiences
• Co-design sessions to help create a new self-management resource
Why Take Part?

💙 Volunteers’ Week spotlight 💙
We’re delighted to celebrate Jay and the fantastic support the individual provides within our physiotherapy-led exercise sessions.
After many years balancing full-time work with caring responsibilities, Jay now volunteers time to support our exercise classes - bringing energy, enthusiasm, and a willingness to learn something completely new.
As Jay shares:
“The work is very different to my previous career, however I feel well supported by the neuro physiotherapists, and I’m enjoying learning and meeting new people in a friendly and welcoming environment. We all face challenges in life and need the support of others at different times, and it’s good to feel like I’m giving something back.”
Jay’s contribution is a wonderful reminder of the power of community, connection, and giving back. Thank you for everything you do 🙏

đź’™ Volunteer story: Dawn đź’™

“I discovered a post on Facebook from South West MS Therapy Centre when they were looking for volunteers to help with Oxygen Therapy. I was intrigued by what was involved, so I applied – and what an amazing place it is.

There are so many friendly staff and volunteers, alongside a wonderful group of members. I’ll admit, I always thought oxygen chambers were only used for deep‑sea divers to help with decompression – how wrong I was!

Using oxygen under pressure can support people with a range of conditions, including MS, and I’ve learned so much about the positive impact this therapy can have. Being part of the Centre has been incredibly rewarding.

If volunteering appeals to you – or if you think Oxygen Therapy might help you – don’t hesitate to get in touch. You’ll receive a warm welcome, and the team will be happy to answer all your questions.”

Thank you, Dawn, for being such a valued part of our community đź’™
