"Wow, how can SHE lift that heavy weight?"
That was my biggest compliment this week whilst in the gym and a little clip and climber leant over the bannister to watch me do my squats.💪🦵
The evidence is irrefutable....strength training is invaluable for ageing bodies. Strength training 2 or more times a week has shown (in numerous studies) to significantly improve strength, bone mineral density, and metabolic and hormonal changes. There's a growing amount of data out there now about this and women in menopause as well as peri and post, but these findings are not gender biased, men benefit too, pre menopausal people benefit and older people benefit. 🦴🫀
In my reading I did find some interesting results demonstrating a correlation between thermoregulation and parasympathetic activation and strength training. It looks like a little more research is required here, but surely it's worth a punt if we can reduce hot flushes and erratic moods? 🥵
The good news is that these studies are telling us that strength training doesn't necessarily have to look like me in this picture lifting these massive weights 😂(if only), it can be body weight isometric stuff or plymotric work or pushing your wheelbarrow around or taking the stairs 2 at a time etc etc.
I'll do a little plug here - the physical part of yoga is a great way of adding strength and stability into your life. Come and try a class! Or I can help yoj in a soft tissue session find the type of strength training that is right for YOU.
So, who is with me and wants to stay physically fit and active into old age? Can you commit to 2 sessions a week and how might it look for you? I'd love to know thoughts, idea, plans.....
