School attendance fines can sound much scarier than they actually are, especially when words like penalty notice, prosecution and conviction start being used.
But they don’t all mean the same thing.

In Part 1 of this series, We thought it was important to break down some of the key things parents and carers in England should understand about school attendance penalty notices, including:

• why an £80 or £160 fine is not a criminal conviction
• what happens with a first and second penalty notice
• why there is a limit on the number of penalty notices that can normally be issued
• and what it actually means if court paperwork arrives
Understanding the terminology can make a situation that feels overwhelming much easier to navigate.

A report shouldn't just describe what's difficult. It should help identify what needs to change.
This is something we feel strongly about at Live to Learn.
Assessment reports can become incredibly important documents in a child's educational journey.
They're read by parents, schools, SENCOs and sometimes Local Authorities and other professionals.
So we want ours to be useful.
That means clearly identifying strengths and needs, explaining what the findings mean and providing meaningful recommendations that can help inform the support a child receives.
Where an EHCP may be part of the journey, our understanding of the education system also shapes the way we approach that evidence.
A report shouldn't disappear into a drawer.
It should help move things forward.

Kelly is the founder of Live to Learn and an experienced Education Consultant, ADI-R Assessor and Case Coordinator, with a professional background spanning education, SEND and law.

As both an education professional and SEN mum, Kelly brings together professional expertise and lived experience to support children, young people and their families. She is passionate about looking beyond labels to understand the whole child, creating flexible, inclusive pathways that recognise their individual strengths, needs and experiences.

Every child learns differently.

Some children flourish in busy classrooms. Others need a quieter environment, extra processing time or different ways of learning altogether.

There is no "right" way to learn.

When a child understands how they learn best, and when the adults around them understand too, confidence begins to grow.
