Don’t be a lab rat with your face.

A recent UK botulism outbreak was linked to two practitioners using an unlicensed botulinum toxin product.

The vials were labelled as containing 200 units, but testing found approximately 370 units — around 85% more than stated.

Botulism is a rare but serious form of poisoning caused by botulinum toxin. Symptoms can include drooping eyelids, blurred or double vision, slurred speech, difficulty swallowing, generalised weakness and breathing difficulties.

This does not mean licensed Botox treatments have suddenly become unsafe. It highlights why the product, the dose, the practitioner and the supply chain all matter.

Your face is not the place to gamble on an unknown product.

We often think dermal filler simply disappears after a year or two.

But that’s not always what happens.

This week I treated a patient who had jaw filler placed around 5–6 years ago. She felt her jawline had gradually become heavier. Using ultrasound, we identified persistent hyaluronic acid filler in the area.

We dissolved it with hyaluronidase, and after the first treatment the heaviness has already started to improve. We’ve now completed a second treatment, and I’ll share the final results soon.

Every face is different, every filler behaves differently, and this is exactly why assessment matters before adding more product.

Not all fillers are the same.

One of the biggest myths I hear is that the “strongest” filler must be the best filler.

In reality, different areas of the face need different properties.

If I want structure and projection, I may choose a firmer filler.

If I want softness, flexibility and natural movement, I may choose a softer filler.

The goal isn’t to use the strongest product.

The goal is to choose the right product for the tissue, the anatomy and the result we are trying to achieve.

That’s why a good consultation matters more than simply asking for a particular brand or type of filler.
