☀️ Heatwave guidance for schools and early years settings ☀️
⚠ With extreme temperatures across many parts of the UK, schools and nurseries are encouraged to take simple steps to help keep children safe from both heat and UV exposure.
Key measures include:
💧 Encouraging children to drink water regularly throughout the day
👕 Relaxing uniform expectations, allowing lightweight, comfortable clothing
🏫 Keeping buildings as cool as possible with ventilation and shading
⏰ Avoiding or limiting time spent outdoors
🏃 Adapting outdoor activities and avoiding strenuous exercise
🧴 Supporting sunscreen reapplication if heading outdoors
👒Wearing sun-protective hats when outdoors
🌳 Making full use of shaded areas during play and outdoor learning
‼ Children can be more vulnerable to the effects of heat and sun exposure, particularly younger children and those with underlying health conditions. Taking preventative action can help reduce the risk of overheating, dehydration and sunburn.
☀ Heatwaves also provide an important reminder that sun safety should not be reserved for exceptionally hot days. Developing good sun-safe habits and creating supportive environments can help protect children's health throughout the year.
💪 Our Sun Safe Schools and Sun Safe Nurseries programmes provide practical guidance, comprehensive resources and support to help education settings embed effective sun safety policies and practices.
