Anxiety is a normal human emotion, along with happiness, sadness, anger, frustration and joy.
One of the ways we can work towards reducing the feeling of anxiety is to change the way in which we talk about it.

If anxiety is something we feel, then we should be saying that we 'feel anxious', just like we would say that we 'feel happy' or that we 'feel sad'.

Often people describe that they 'have anxiety'. Does that mean that they 'have happiness' or 'have sadness'? No, they are feelings of emotion.

So next time you feel a little anxious, be mindful of your language and change what you are saying - see how it helps.

It may sound great to be practically perfect in every way, but this isn’t realistic and in fact perfectionism plays a significant role in impostor syndrome.

That feeling of never being satisfied with a piece of work or project you’ve completed, believing you could do better.

Always fixating on flaws or mistakes.

Believing there’s a perfect script for a conversation and not wanting to say something wrong.

Having trouble asking for help and procrastinating because of your high standards.
This often leads to a great deal of self-pressure and high amounts of anxiety.

The change in people who have worked with me is something I love to observe. I see a big difference in their body language, and they start smiling with a sparkle in their eyes. They leave my sessions with new energy and enthusiasm, which is great to see and feel.

I am working on some content around goals, goal setting and what your mind is actually telling you if you aren't achieving them. But before I share, I am interested to know if you have set goals this month... give me a 👍 or 👎

And.. it is ABSOLUTELY ok and acceptable not to have set any!

A little 🧡 We are into the second week of January and it’s a time when those new goals and habits start to feel tough.

Remember though that habit forming takes time. You are building memory and mind muscle.

Anyone can develop impostor syndrome, but there are some factors that can increase your chances of developing it.

These include;

👉🏻 A new opportunity, promotion or career:
You may feel undeserving of the new position or that you won’t be able to perform adequately.

👉🏻 Being from a marginalized population group:
If you’ve grown up alongside a “gifted” sibling, you may internalise feelings of inadequacy that are not justified. Conversely, a person who finds it easy to perform well during childhood may experience doubts when faced with a task that’s hard to achieve.

👉🏻Being from a marginalized population group:
Research suggests that people from some ethnic groups may be more at risk. The experience of discrimination may play a role.

👉🏻 Having depression and anxiety:
These are common among people with impostor syndrome.

While many studies focus on females, research suggests that age and gender do not affect the likelihood of experiencing impostor syndrome.

Do you say affirmations?

Many people have affirmations and they can be useful but only if you truly believe and accept them.

So when you feel a little more anxious than you want, you might say “This feeling will pass”. This one can be justified, as you have evidence that this is what has happened in the past.

But sometimes, some affirmations aren't helpful. “I'm calm and confident” when you are feeling stressed, overwhelmed and anxious isn't so helpful - you might have a little voice inside your head is going “no you’re not” and then you might feel like a fraud or a failure.

Try this one instead. “I'm choosing to be calm”
