First day back at work after 7 weeks off healing from finger surgery. Thank you to all my lovely patients, I'll be visiting you all in the next few weeks. Unfortunately I am unable to take on any new feet at the moment 🦶

Top tip - if you struggle to reach your feet to cream them pop some foot cream in a small open freezer/sandwich bag and squidge your feet into it while seated!

Keep a towel nearby and don’t get up in a hurry! No slipping ☝️

Why do our toe nails thicken with age?

Unfortunately, thickening toenails are a by-product of aging, in most cases. As we age, our toenails - and fingernails - slow their growth rate, and the nails thicken because the nail cells, called onychocytes, sort of pile up. Fingernails appear to thicken less, probably because we tend to them more often with filing and buffing, which thins them.

But in addition to this natural thickening of the nails, other factors may be at play also. Among them are trauma, fungal infections, and impaired circulation. Feet are under constant stress from falling objects, stubbing injuries, poor foowear, closed-in footwear, and athletic activities. All of these conditions can alter the cells from which the nails grow, and if one tends to stub or injure the same toe, the nail plate can easily become thickened or disfigured.

Your Foot health practitioner is trained to safely thin your toe nails should they need it which keeps the toes more comfortable & pain free.

I’ve just received the most humbling phone call from a patient who wanted to thank me for helping save his life.

Last week I left my foot stool at a patients house by mistake, I returned an hour later to collect it and after a little wait for him to answer the door it became very clear all was not well, patient was very disoriented, unable to speak, looking straight through me and unsteady on his feet. I sat him down and called the emergency services while trying to comfort him and answer the operators questions.
While waiting for the ambulance to arrive I searched through his little diary and found this daughters telephone number who rushed over to assist.

Patient was taken to hospital for tests (seizure or stroke) and has since made a full recovery ❤️‍🩹

If I hadn’t of left my foot stool behind and went back for it who knows how this would of ended but he’s extremely thankful I did!
