❤️ WHY 5TH SEPTEMBER?

Today is the International Day of Charity.

The date was chosen to honour Mother Teresa, who died on 5 September 1997.

The day recognises the difference that charities, volunteers and ordinary acts of generosity can make to people's lives.

And charity isn't always about giving money.

Sometimes it's giving your time.
Sometimes it's lending a hand.
Sometimes it's simply being there.

There is a town in the Netherlands called De Hogeweyk, located in Weesp just outside of Amsterdam, that the Dutch built exclusively for elderly people with dementia. Instead of living in a typical hospital-like nursing home, the elderly residents live in normal houses designed to match the era they remember best (like the 1950s or 70s).

They can go to the village supermarket to buy groceries, grab a beer at the local pub, or sit in the park all within a completely secure environment where the staff blends in as everyday townspeople living a normal life.
It completely changes the paradigm of how we treat aging.
