A cardiac emergency can happen anywhere, at any time, even in the workplace⚡

Having a defibrillator (AED) on-site isn’t just a box on the wall… It’s the difference between life and death.

Defibrillator on site:
👉 Every minute without a defibrillator reduces survival chances by up to 10%.
👉 Having one on-site can make all the difference.

Access saves time:
👉 Defibrillator cabinets and clear signage help ensure the device can be retrieved
quickly and safely when it is needed most.

Visibility drives action:
👉 When people know where the defibrillator is and feel confident accessing it, they are far more likely to step in and help.

Being prepared isn’t optional. It’s responsible.

CPR saves lives, but only when the right support is in place at the right time.

Across Scotland, new defibrillators and focused community efforts are being introduced to improve survival chances from cardiac arrest in the areas that need it most.

The focus:

👉 Getting lifesaving equipment to the right places, faster
👉 Making sure help arrives sooner, because those first few minutes are critical

Survival isn’t about hours. It’s about immediate action.

Defibrillators are reliable, lifesaving pieces of equipment, but it’s normal to have questions about using them in unusual situations.

Is it safe to use a defibrillator when...

1️⃣ The women is pregnant?

Yes. The approach is the same as it is for any cardiac arrest.

Fortunately, a cardiac arrest is rare in pregnant women, but if it were to occur, it is appropriate to use a defibrillator.

2️⃣ The person is lying on a wet or metal surface?

Yes. If the pads are applied correctly, and there’s no direct contact between the user and the individual when the shock is delivered, there is no direct pathway that electricity can take that would cause the user to experience a shock.

3️⃣ The person is a child?

Yes. Some defibs have a ‘child’ option to allow the appropriate energy to be delivered to a child.

If this option is not available, adult pads and energy can still be used safely, ensure that the pads are not in contact with each other.

A community defibrillator is a wonderful gift.
But buying one is the easy part.

Keeping it ready to save a life takes planning, commitment and a community willing to look after it.

Across the UK, we have seen incredible fundraising efforts and charity work to install public defibrillators. It is one of the most generous and potentially life-saving things a community can do.

But installing a defibrillator is not just about buying the device and putting it on a wall. It requires planning, commitment, and ongoing support to ensure it is ready when someone needs it most.

If your local community is thinking about installing one, here is a simple checklist to consider 👇
