When Clapgate Primary School Teaching Assistant Vicky Stevens collapsed during a school nature walk, colleagues Aston Queeley and Nicola Holmes started CPR.

With no public defibrillator nearby, they continued chest compressions for 18 minutes until help arrived.

Doctors later said Vicky would not have made it to the hospital without their actions.

Their calm response, confidence and training helped save a life, and they have now been recognised with Resuscitation Certificates from the Royal Humane Society .

It is an incredible example of how ordinary people can make an extraordinary difference when they have the skills, confidence and courage to act.

CPR training saves lives. In those critical moments, it can mean everything.

What if BLS training didn’t depend on an instructor being present the whole time?

By pairing structured, self-directed learning with the right technology, organisations are beginning to rethink how CPR is taught. Fewer rote drills.

Greater consistency. Actionable performance metrics. Crucially, educators can concentrate their efforts where they matter most - supporting judgement, confirming competence, and improving outcomes.

One hospital has already adopted this model.

The real question isn’t whether instructors belong in the process, but where they deliver the greatest value.
