Apparently, if you want a book deal these days, you have to pr******te yourself on social media.

That’s what someone said to me recently.

And yesterday, someone in the literary world told me publishers are looking for around 100,000 followers on one platform, or an email list of 10,000 genuinely engaged people. At first I thought this wouldn’t be too hard - loads of people have over 100k followers - but then I realised that even if I had one follower for every word of my book (71,000) I still wouldn’t have 100,000 followers.

So… here I am.

I didn’t sit down and decide I wanted to become an author. One day, I had an idea and I had to get it on paper. A bit like an artist needs to express themselves via their art. It just needed to come out.

Since then, I’ve edited and edited and edited. It’s been a year of hard work.

The book is heavily researched, packed with references, and explores a topic that has come to me through two decades of therapy work.

The people who’ve read it so far tell me it’s good.

And I believe it’s important enough to deserve a place on a bookshelf.

So if this feels a bit awkward, it is, I’m trying my best If you have any interest in why this mismatch might be the answer to your struggles - even when your life looks good on paper, please help me to help you by clicking follow.

I talk and write a lot about what we need as humans but I try not to just talk and write about it. At we (I) organise wellbeing events with everything I mention here in mind. Community, movement, nature, nourishment, rest etc. On Saturday we had a fantastic celebration for Solstice. The day was full to the brim, breath work, tarot card reading, gong meditation, 5rhythms, mindfulness, hypnosis, yoga, massage, music, ecstatic dance, group singing …. And take a breath … Here’s a little snippet. 🔥

Many people feel surprised by the sense of emptiness that can appear after an addiction stops. Despite causing difficulties, it occupied time, provided a sense of familiarity, offered moments of relief, and routine. When it is no longer there, many people become aware of the unmet needs they numbed through the addiction. Understanding those needs is an important part of recovery.

How many can you tick off?

One of the ideas at the heart of my Human Mismatch Theory is that wellbeing often isn't about finding the perfect morning routine or buying another self-help book.

It's about meeting the needs humans have always had: movement, nourishment, connection and sleep.

This bingo card is a simple reminder of some of those things.

Screenshot it, save it, and see how many squares you can tick this week. Let me know in the comments below.

Please follow if you don't already, and like if you think this is fun.

I'd love to know your score.

ps. your brain says online connection doesn't count.

We often think about health in terms of food, exercise and sleep. Yet for most of human history, connection was just as essential for survival.

We are the most dependent species on Earth. We rely on other people from birth and continue to rely on them throughout our lives. Our biology evolved in tribes, where belonging increased the chances of survival and exclusion carried real risks.

Our nervous systems still respond in much the same way today.

Research suggests that when we feel accepted, supported and connected, the body functions more effectively. When we experience conflict, rejection or loneliness, the body can shift into a defensive state. Social Safety Theory proposes that our brains are constantly scanning for signs that we are safe with other people.

What I find particularly interesting is that loneliness isn't simply about being alone. It's about how connected we feel. In fact, feeling lonely appears to have a greater impact on health than physical isolation itself.

Earlier humans got connection by default. Today, many of us have to work surprisingly hard to find it.

Maybe that's why so many of us feel like something is missing, when on paper everything looks fine.

A few years ago, if you’d told me I’d be hosting a Solstice celebration in a gorgeous woodland with some of the coolest people eveeeeer, I’d have said ... nooooo way let’s start now!!!

Over the years, I’ve become increasingly interested in the ways humans have gathered throughout history. Around fires, telling stories, singing and dancing together.

Our Summer Solstice Celebration isn’t a retreat from life - it’s a day to step into it.

Throughout the day, there will be opportunities to move, breathe, connect, reflect, create, laugh, rest, listen to stories, enjoy music, sit around the fire and spend time with good people in a beautiful setting.

Every facilitator is someone I genuinely admire. People who care deeply about what they do and who bring their own unique gifts to the day.

You don’t need to stay all day. You can pop in for an hour, join a workshop, listen to some music, have a cup of tea by the fire, or spend the whole day with us.

If you’ve been feeling the pull to spend a little more time outdoors, around people, away from screens and surrounded by things that feel real, we’d love to welcome you.

It is going to be the best day ❤️‍🔥

I've been desperately trying to seek out sweetgrass for a while - well since reading Braiding Sweetgrass (review further down the grid).

In many Indigenous traditions, is known as the "hair of Mother Earth" and, like many natural traditions, should only be gifted. Today, my daughters found and braided some for me. This makes me happy - it may be a small thing but it's a big thing to me.

A number of years ago I watched the Wim Hof TV series with the celebrities. They did some breathwork and, to me, it looked incredibly performative. It wasn’t the first time I’d thought that, and I continued to think it every time I saw people using altered-state breathwork. It all seemed a bit theatrical - exaggerated - celebrities performing as they know how.

That was probably my biggest fear when I signed up for my breathwork training. I was worried I was about to spend several days surrounded by eccentric people putting on a show.

Then it was my turn. As someone who definitely doesn’t like to attract attention and definitely wasn’t going to be shaking or doing weird things like that I was at least able to surrender to it when my body did start doing things I wasn’t consciously choosing. My hands began to contract, my face changed, waves of different sensations moved through me. At one point I realised why people get addicted to this! There was one lunch time when I remarked on the physicality of another person and someone pointed out that I’d had a bit of a physical experience too! Cringe! If I’d seen myself without experiencing it, I probably would have thought I was performing too.

But I wasn’t and I’m not.

That experience forced me to reconsider everything. What I dismissed as performance wasn’t at all. It turns out breath work is pretty powerful. The strange thing for me is that every time I do it the physical reaction is different...I can only imagine I’m holding all my “stuff” physically. I’m really enjoying maintaining a breath work practice and releasing in this way regularly.

This was me on an online breath work session with others - hence the noise of others breathing in the background.
