I cannot give you an actual answer to this question.
I won't say you should expect X amount of mils per expressing session.

Why?

🍈 Each of your breasts will produce different amounts of milk
🍈 Time of the day
🍈 Length of expressing session
🍈 Type of pump/ fl**ge/ strength

⚠️ Expressing amounts don't reflect the amount of milk your baby is getting ⚠️

You can express your milk and off a bottle from birth 🤯

So why does the guidance say 6 weeks?
Because your prolactin hormone is at its peek in those early weeks, by expressing your milk and feeding your baby you might create an over supply.

Tips for getting expressing off to a great start
⭐ Express at the same time you feed baby
⭐ Express only the milk you need to feed your baby, being careful not to create an oversupply.
⭐ If offering a bottle feed. Express for that feed during the same day.

Is the Hakka a pump?

Hakka is a brand name.

The pump is Slilcone bulb pump.

And yes it is a pump. It creates a continuous pulling suction 🪠 on your breast tissue. It is not just catching your let down.

✅ Great for quick use to build a struggling milk supply along side a manual/ electric pump

🟧 Can damage ni**le/ breast tissue with high suction if applied wrong/ too often
🟧 Can create an oversupply of milk
🟧 Struggles to extract fattier milk
🟧 Continuous pressure - not mimicking baby suckling

If you wish to catch your let down use a hard plastic shell let down catcher.
Be mindful of what you are going to be using this milk for, and if you need to catch it at all.

Wanting to introduce a bottle in the evening or another time of day? 👇

👶 Under 8 weeks old? 👶
⭐ Express as close to the bottle timing as possible
⭐ Protect your prolactin hormone
⭐ Prevent feedback inhibitor

👶 Over 8 weeks? 👶
Your prolactin hormone response is more robust now!
⭐ Express a "feed" within the 24h period around the bottle feed.

⚠️ Missing a breast feed can cause engorged breasts - express to comfort ⚠️

⚠️ Missing a feed can cause a decrease in milk production as milk is created on a demand and supply basis. You demand it and remove it, your body will make more. ⚠️

Why does expressing feel different day to day, session to session?

✨ Hormones✨

💕 Oxytocin the love hormone is responsible for the 'let down' or release of your milk.

If you are feeling anxious, stressed, rushed to express this can hinder Oxytocin.

If you are struggling to express milk try the following:
⭐ Find a quiet/ calm space or time
⭐ Relax your shoulders
⭐ Warm your breasts
⭐ Cover the bottle with a baby sock to stop you looking 👀
⭐ Look at photos/ videos of your baby
⭐ Watch funny videos
⭐ Listen to music you love.

How to pump breast milk for a small amount/ one off?

⭐ Hand expressing is probably your best tool!
⭐ Use a sterile bottle to collect your milk in
⭐ Freeze if not used within 3 days of expressing
⭐ Express once a day to not over stimulate your breasts
⭐ Over stimulation can cause over supply.

⛽ You can also use a manual/ electric pump

⭐ Remember to express for the feed you are missing ⭐
⭐ You may feel your breast becoming full and tight when missing a feed.

No one is bothered by a baby's latch at a bottle. 🍼

I am.

Here's why 👇

⚠️ Shallow latch or a pinched latch like the one in the video can cause the following; ⚠️
🟧 Slipping on and off the bottle
🟧 Gap in the seal from lips to bottle teat causing dripping and air gasping
🟧 Not optimizing all jaw muscles for development

✅ Deep latch on a bottle as well as a breast
✅ Seal tight = no dripping or excess air
✅ Using all jaw muscles to remove the milk from the bottle 🍼

Answering more expressing questions.

How do I pump when baby is cluster feeding?

The short answer is you don't have to!

Now let's break it down 👇

Cluster feeding is a term given to a pattern of breastfeeding where baby is wanting feeds close together over a block period of time, usually in the evenings

⭐ Baby feeding constantly in the evening

⭐ Feels like you do not have enough milk

⭐ You do, they're placing their order!

⭐ Giving a bottle of expressed breast milk or formula may give you short term help, but can impact your milk supply long term!

⭐ Lean on your support system

🧠 It's neurodevelopmental positive. Building millions of connections in their brain

When to seek help and support

🚩 Cluster feeding lasts all day and night

🚩 You are overwhelmed

🚩 Wet and dirty nappies decrease

🚩 Baby is distressed at the breast/ off the breast

🚩 It is lasting more than 5 days in a row

🚩 You are concerned and need reassurance and a feeding assessment

⭐ Why are you pumping every 90min?
If it is to increase your supply allowing baby to cluster feed will do this.

⭐ Biologically baby's are designed to cluster feed on and off in the early weeks. This is to increase your milk supply and build a robust milk factory for months to come.

⭐ If you feel you need to express during this time you can do so from the breast baby is not feeding from. Place baby in a rugby ball position and pump on the other side.
