Tick season is well underway across the UK, and with warmer weather comes an increased risk of tick-borne disease for our pets 🐾

Ticks are commonly picked up in long grass, woodland areas, coastal paths, and even some local parks and gardens. Once attached, they feed on blood and can transmit infections such as Lyme disease.

After every walk, we recommend checking your pet carefully, especially around:
• Ears
• Neck and collar area
• Between the toes
• Armpits and groin
• Around the eyes and lips

If you find a tick, avoid pulling or twisting it with your fingers, as this can leave mouthparts behind and increase irritation or infection risk. Proper tick removal tools are the safest option.

Regular parasite prevention remains the most effective way to protect your pet throughout tick season.

If you’d like advice on the best flea and tick prevention for your pet’s lifestyle, our team is always happy to help and don’t forget we have our VIP pet plan 🐶🐱

Bank Holiday Monday Pet Safety Reminder 🐾

As many of us enjoy the long weekend with family gatherings, BBQs, countryside walks, and days out, it’s worth remembering that bank holidays can present a few extra risks for our pets.

As vets, we often see an increase in preventable accidents over holiday weekends, including:

🌭 BBQ hazards – Cooked bones, skewers, fatty foods, onions, and corn cobs can all cause serious digestive problems or blockages.

🍺 Alcohol and human treats – Keep drinks, chocolate, cakes, and snacks well out of paw’s reach.

☀️ Warm weather awareness – Ensure pets have access to shade and fresh water at all times, and avoid exercising dogs during the hottest part of the day.

🐕 Busy parks and beaches – Check leads, collars, and ID tags before heading out, and be mindful of livestock, wildlife, and strong currents near water.

🚗 Travel safely – Never leave pets unattended in vehicles, even for a few minutes.

Most importantly, enjoy making memories together. A little preparation can help keep the bank holiday fun and stress-free for the whole family, including our four-legged friends. ❤️

World Bee Day: Keep Pets Safe Around Bees 🐶🐱

Bees are vital for our environment — but curious pets sometimes get a little too close! 🌼

Here are a few quick tips to keep your pets safe this spring:
• Watch for pawing at the face or sudden swelling
• Bee stings around the mouth can become serious quickly
• Avoid letting pets snap at buzzing insects
• Contact your vet if you notice breathing difficulty, vomiting, or severe swelling

Most stings are mild, but some pets can have allergic reactions just like humans.

Have your pets ever had a run-in with a bee? 🐝👇

May is Pet Cancer Awareness Month 🐾

Cancer affects pets more often than many owners realise, especially as they get older. Early detection can make a real difference to treatment options and quality of life.

Keep an eye out for signs such as:
• Lumps or bumps that are growing or changing
• Unexplained weight loss
• Changes in appetite or thirst
• Low energy or reluctance to exercise
• Ongoing limping or stiffness
• Wounds that don’t heal

Not every change means cancer but it’s always worth getting checked!

5 signs a cow may need calving assistance 🚨

Knowing when to intervene can make a huge difference for both cow and calf.

🐄 Strong straining with no progress for 30+ minutes
🐄 Only one leg visible
🐄 Swollen tongue or abnormal presentation
🐄 Exhaustion or stopping contractions
🐄 Calf visible but not advancing

Early action can help prevent complications and improve outcomes for everyone involved.
