Join us for the Blue Moon gathering this Sunday at Mermaid Beach from 7:30pm 🌕🌊

Two full moons in one month only happens every few years, and the next one won’t be until 2028!

Where/when:

🏝️ Mermaid Beach (west side, the beach in front of Mermaid Café) at 7:30pm. We’ll be down on the beach closer to the sea.

What:

🔥 A simple beach fire under the full moon
✨ A friendly, welcoming community for over 6 years

Coming on your own? You’ll be absolutely fine - just come say hi, people are lovely 💛

🏊‍♀️ Some people may choose to swim, but this is not a supervised or coached session. Please only enter the water if you feel confident in open water and take full responsibility for your own safety.

What to bring:
🪵 Wood for the fire (if you can)
🥤 Snacks / drinks / music / anything to share
Or just yourself

Kids welcome
Always free to attend.

So excited that Granville Parade Beach (in front of the rowing club) has officially been designated as a DEFRA bathing water beach 🌊

This means our sea is now regularly tested and recognised as a proper swimming beach - something to celebrate together!

We’re one of only a few towns in the UK to achieve this, and it’s all down to our amazing community pushing for cleaner water.

Join us this Saturday at 10am for a celebratory community swim, dip or paddle - or just come down and be part of the beach gathering 💙

“No more poo” might be the understatement of the year. 💩🌊

Sea swimmers, surfers and local campaigners are heading to Sunny Sands this Saturday (16 May, 2pm) for a Surfers Against Sewage Paddle Out protest against sewage discharges into our seas.

The demonstration also marks the launch of Cleaner Seas for Mermaid Beach & Beyond, a new group applying for Designated Bathing Status for Mermaid Beach and pushing for more beaches between Dover and Dungeness to be regularly tested.

Right now, Sunny Sands is the only beach locally monitored by the Environment Agency between May and October. Meanwhile, swimmers across the district have reported repeated sewage discharges since January, with concerns over both storm overflows and unexplained spills.

There’ll also be live music from local band Pretty Crap, who’ve apparently written a song about sewage dumps. Which feels… sadly on brand.

This moment, just before you go deeper, is often the hardest part of any of my swims.

Today I coached someone who had never swum out of their depth before. They wanted to feel confident enough to swim further out with their friends.

By the end, they’d gone further than they thought possible, and you could feel the shift in their confidence. It was amazing to see.

That’s the part I love most about coaching - helping people realise what they’re capable of 🌊!

Mermaid beach took a battering this morning!

Winter storms reshape the coastline here every year - sometimes gently, sometimes dramatically.

This beach has held so many swims, and the wall breaking feels sad, but it’s also the wildness of the sea reminding us she’s alive, shifting and powerful.
