This lovely Mama was going to a boxing class, but avoiding sit ups as she didn't feel confident with them, and they were hard.
She could do a sit up after a couple of goes, but they were a little wonky (maybe one side of the abdominal wall is stronger? Maybe the nervous system was protecting one side of the scar? Don't know, it doesn't really matter).
To help out I handed her a dumbbell, and she was a little wary...but just watch her face and listen to her reaction. Says it all.
If we avoid movements due to fear, lack of confidence, or because they're hard, we won't get stronger in those movements. The body needs variability, mobility and strength in all directions, so train the hard things!
Using a weight during a crunch acts as a counterbalance, which adds momentum to help swing you up from the floor. This helps to:
β¨ Build confidence with the movement
β¨ Build muscle co-ordination and strength in the movement
β¨ Feel badass
Up the challenge when ready by using a smaller weight, hold the weight closer to your chest, or come up/down slower.
