For generations, one of the first jobs given to young lads starting work in Britain’s coal mines was that of a pony driver. 🐴⛏️
Working deep beneath the ground, these young drivers were responsible for guiding the pit ponies that hauled heavy tubs of coal, equipment and other materials through the dark mine workings.
For many of the ponies, the mine became almost their entire world. They could spend around 50 weeks of the year underground, housed in specially built subterranean stables before finally being brought back to the surface for a short annual break.
The work was demanding. Ponies wore heavy harnesses and protective headgear to help shield them from low roofs, while specialised equipment allowed them to pull loaded tubs along the tracks.
But among the darkness, dust and hard labour, remarkable friendships developed.
Drivers spent countless hours alongside the same animals and quickly learned their individual personalities. Some ponies became famous for being stubborn or mischievous, while others would eagerly nudge their young handlers in the hope of receiving a favourite treat.
For a boy working in an intimidating world underground, his pony could become far more than simply a working animal. They were partners who faced each shift together. ❤️
As machinery gradually replaced animal power, the number of pit ponies declined dramatically. By 1978, just 149 were reportedly still working underground in Britain, although a small number continued working at collieries into the 1990s.
Today, the pit ponies remain an unforgettable part of mining history — animals whose strength helped move millions of tonnes of coal and whose companionship was remembered for decades by the men and boys who worked beside them.
A difficult life beneath the earth, but one that created some extraordinary bonds between people and horses. 🖤
