Not all heroes wear capes. Staff dog Pippa was in a couple of weeks ago donating blood to help out a fellow canine. As you can see by her face she clearly took the situation very seriously.

๐ŸดEQUINE CLIENTS: ADVICE FOR FAECAL WORM EGG COUNT SAMPLES ๐Ÿด

As we enter the busy season for processing faecal worm egg count samples (FWECS), we want to offer some practical tips to help you collect high-quality samples for the most accurate results. Remember, routine worming for every horse is no longer recommended, as unnecessary treatments can contribute to wormer resistance - a growing concern in the UK. Avoiding unnecessary use of wormers also benefits your horse's gut health.

Our advice follows the latest BEVA canter guidelines and current research. By incorporating FWECS, tapeworm saliva tests, and redworm blood tests, you can create a safe and targeted worming plan tailored to each individual horse.

Current recommendations are to obtain 3 FWECs over the course of the grazing season. An ideal schedule for collecting these in Scotland would be:

1. Late March / early April.
2. June
3. Late August

๐ŸดHOW TO COLLECT A FAECAL WORM EGG COUNT SAMPLE ๐Ÿด

1. Label a ziplock bag with the date and horse name.

2. Collect sample from freshly passed manure (

โ—FAO HORSE OWNERS: INCREASE IN EQUINE FLU OUTBREAKS THIS MONTH
We are urging owners to be alert for signs of equine influenza virus following a recent increase in UK cases, including outbreaks in South Ayrshire and, more recently, in South Lanarkshire on 20th April. The map below shows outbreak locations from 1/4/26 to 24/4/26.
Seventy-five percent of recent outbreaks involved horses that had recently travelled.
โ€ข Limit horse travel and isolate new arrivals for three weeks, whether vaccinated or not, because vaccinated horses can still carry the virus without obvious symptoms.
โ€ข Check that your vaccines are up to date. For competing horses or those at high risk, 6 monthly boosters are recommended.
โ€ข Practice good biosecurity: Donโ€™t share equipment and restrict contact with horses from other premises.
Notify your vet promptly if you suspect a case.
If you have any concerns or would like to check your vaccines are up to date then feel free to call the team at Kidd Veterinary Centre on 01307 463582.
