DEMENTIA ACTION WEEK
As we mark Dementia Action WeeK, 17–24 May, at the Caring Community Circles we are reflecting on the importance of building communities that are informed, compassionate, and supportive for everyone affected by dementia. Dementia Action Week, led by the Alzheimer's Society encourages people and organisations across the UK to raise awareness, reduce stigma, and create more dementia-friendly communities.
We recognise that awareness is only the beginning.
Real community wellbeing grows through meaningful action, understanding, connection, and care for one another in everyday life.
At the CCC, we feel deeply grateful to have author and dementia expert Maggie La Tourelle as one of our advisors, alongside many other talented and experienced people who contribute wisdom, compassion, and practical insight to our shared work.
Maggie is the author of The Gift of Alzheimer’s: New Insights into the Potential of Alzheimer’s and Its Care, written with Neale Donald Walsch, and has spent many years supporting a more compassionate and holistic understanding of dementia and caregiving. Check in the comments to learn more about Maggie's work and dementia's action week.
Dementia touches the lives of millions of people, not only those living with the condition, but also families, friends, carers, neighbours, and wider communities. According to the Alzheimer’s Society, every three minutes someone in the UK develops dementia, making awareness, early understanding, and compassionate support more important than ever.
Being a caring community means learning how to better support one another with patience, kindness, inclusion, and dignity. Simple acts of understanding can make a profound difference. By improving awareness around dementia, we strengthen our collective ability to create environments where people feel safe, respected, connected, and valued at every stage of life. There is a lot of guidance available for supporting people, not just with dementia, but also for the ones around the people affected by dementia.
Dementia awareness is not only a health issue; it is also about community culture, human dignity, and how we care for one another as we journey through life together.
During this Dementia Action Week, from the CCC we invite everyone to take a moment to learn more, start conversations, and help foster communities where no one feels isolated, unseen, or forgotten. Through awareness, understanding, and compassionate action, we can help flourish a kinder future for all.
