“Every flower blooms in its own time” This week at 42 Acres: The land feels green and lush after what proved to be days of cool, refreshing rain. Fruits such as ruby red strawberries are beginning to flourish in the Walled Garden and we are patiently awaiting the ripening of peaches, apricots and figs!

We’ve officially started the two week countdown for The Summer Solstice Retreat with We’re going all out to put on an extra special weekend with practices & intentions to guide you through a carefully curated experience that has 3 focal points: inner healing, re-wilding ourselves, and living celebration. We cannot wait, and hope to see you there!

As we close this week, we’d like to say a big thank you to everyone who watches and interacts with 42 Seconds. We are on hiatus for a couple of weeks, but will be back soon sharing more of our weekly antics!

Here’s Molly, our wild food lead, sharing knowledge about one of Europe’s most recognisable hedgerow flowers: Elderflower (Sambucus niger).

In ancient mythology, Elder is a highly sacred plant with a spirit known as ‘Elder Mother’ or ‘Hylde Moer’ in Danish, who resides within the tree - and whose permission must be sought before the tree is touched. In order to make use of the flower and fruit of the tree, the correct prayers and offerings would need to be made.

Herbalists have revered Elderflower for its anti-inflammatory and immune boosting properties, due to it being rich in flavonoids and phenolic acid. Elderflower may also act as a diaphoretic, meaning it encourages sweating. This helps lower fevers, clear blocked sinuses, and soothe sore throats.

So, next time you are enjoying a glass of Elderflower cordial, remember that you are sipping on one of nature’s natural remedies with links to the mythical and magical.

It’s so vibrant here right now. Walking the land is a multisensory experience. The air is thick with tufts of floating willow cotton and swirling flights of swallows. The scent of blooming flowers is heady and sweet, and the persistent thrum of millions of insects is punctuated by rich birdsong.

Experiencing these everyday miracles reminds us that as we tend to nature, we are also tending to our own well-being, and to our shared future.

Come to 42 and get a first-hand feel of this. Here’s a list of upcoming retreats, events, and experiences. We hope something calls to you 🌻

“An absolute treat of a retreat. Self-catered accommodation was
high-quality and spacious. Take your walking boots and explore the beautiful surroundings, look for the animals and listen to the birds. Take a boat out on the lake or just swim in it, then do the wood-fired sauna. We self-catered, but you can order locally produced meals delivered to your door.” ”

-- Martin, Self-Catered Stay Guest 2026

Slow down for a moment and picture this: waking up to birdsong outside your window, a picnic breakfast basket of premium provisions delivered to your door, and nothing rushing you except the desire to go explore.

That’s the rhythm of a self-catered stay at 42 Acres, time and space to do things your way, whether that means slow mornings, long walks, wild swims, or wood-fired sauna sessions after a day outside.

“The Farmhouse was a lovely property, we had such a lovely time in such a peaceful setting. It helped us to have such a wholesome weekend with a cold water swim, yoga, wild sauna and outdoors fire.”

☀️

Every school holiday, we open our retreat spaces for self-catered stays, an invitation to gather your favourite people and slow down together in nature.

Each space has been consciously restored to feel calm, grounding and deeply peaceful. Hidden amongst wild landscapes and dark skies, they’re designed for meaningful connection, rest and a little bit of magic.

To enrich your stay, you can also book from our menu of nature-connection, wellbeing, and soil-to-gut food experiences, from picnic lunch baskets and family fire crafting, to wild sauna sessions and private fire circles under the stars.

The Farmhouse is our largest space, with 5 beautiful bedrooms sleeping up to 11 guests. Its adjoining annex, Rettig, adds another 4 bedrooms, making it perfect for larger family gatherings, retreats or celebrations.

Come and experience a slower, softer way to spend the holidays.

“See how quickly the land softens when there is new life” This week at 42 Acres there's been a wonderful feeling of rebirth as we get to see the next generation of wildlife appearing on the land. So far we’ve loved seeing goslings, barn owl chicks, and swallows who are preparing their nests ready for new arrivals - echoing in beautifully with this week’s retreat for expecting and new mums.

On Sunday, we’ll be holding our first ever Wild Guardians volunteer session, focusing on the theme of Bats and Beavers as part of the Great Somerset Wildlife Count. Excitingly, joining us is guest expert Keith Ball from Somerset Bat Group! To get involved please visit ‘Retreats and Events’ under ‘What’s On’ at 42acres.com

This Friday, we are feeling grateful for Guy, Glynie and Raf who curated a new lakeside spot - where guests can relax, take respite on walks, and view all the flora and fauna the water has to offer.

Whilst Britain has one of the highest levels of membership of environmental organisations in the world, recent research* named Britain one of the world’s least nature-connected nations, a reminder of how easily modern life can pull us away from the living world around us.

If nature is not separate from us, then perhaps every moment spent reconnecting with the natural world is also a way of reconnecting with ourselves. A way to stitch us back into the wider living world. Where we belong.

This summer, we’re doing things a little differently.

We’re opening our retreat spaces for self-catered stays in deep nature where families can slow down, settle in, and choose add-on experiences that invite reconnection with nature and each other.

No crowds. No noise. No rush. No frayed nerves. No climate guilt. Just space.

Weave in our new family-friendly experiences:

🔥 Family Fire Craft with Raf, learn primal skills in the woods

🌸 Flower Party with Russell, with edible flowers & cupcakes!

🦆 Lucky Ducks - a family permaculture adventure with Dave & Guy...and our ducks

🌱 Family Foraging with Molly, a playful, sensory intro to wild edibles

🧘 Family Yoga & Nature Connection with Sophie, slow down, breathe, and reconnect together

All designed to sit gently alongside your stay. Not structure it, just enrich it.

🌸 Self-catered stays + optional family experiences. Summer dates now open.
