• Autumn Equinox •

I love that this point in the year is just after the kids go back to school and at a point where I can focus back to myself. Landing before the nights draw further in…

A time to pause and reflect as the heavens balance night and day. This year’s gathering will be movement and meditation that explores the embodiment of harvest.

Preparing for the worst and living for the best, August felt like a second hibernation, a backpack of anxiety, grief, a slow exhale, a homecoming… as a beautiful friend says it’s been ‘like pushing water uphill’ (so apt for a drought) Here’s my month, in no particular order, through this cracked lens:

There have been moments of such beauty amongst the harshness of this summer. Tenderness, honesty, hope.

I pilgrimaged so hard I bruised my feet walking to see the solar eclipse through dry fields and still-damp holloways to view from an ancient hill fort. A flirtation with Agatha Christie. Wriggling toads, a greenhouse full of frogs, a mouthful of unsaid words, dead baby pigeons on my stairs, hungry kittens, fleeting lizards, eagle potential, swimming with a seal in the North Sea and garden grasshoppers galore. I watered things I wanted to keep alive. Hauling buckets of grey water down. Closing the windows. Opening the windows. Rituals we never asked for. I let plants die. Continually letting go. And still a lot of admin to hold onto…

My first proper solo hike. Zero phone reception. Me and a map. Moments where there were only sheep and me and a distant bird of prey in the sky. Racing myself back.

A deep inner relief to see blankets of green. Beautiful new humans. A gorgeous retreat with paint and comfort and heat. And. Back to the rain.

I’ll squirrel architect into this a little more in my newsletter which won’t be out til September starts properly (i.e when the schools and colleges open their doors and my brain has space to settle). Message if you want to read those deeper ramb

Give me a wave if you’ve sauna’d through this heat 🙌

Don’t get me wrong - the rest of the time i’ve been summer hibernating, because a) ginger and b) this is bot normal.

But then the sauna is a different kind of warm. Comforting, controlled, chosen. And with a view like this & a pond to swim in… 🐸🌞 it’s been a little island of peace.

First fruit of the year from the garden in hand. Merry May 🌞

Ginger bug is bubbling in the cupboard and a lilac lemonade chilling in the fridge.

I don’t post much of the garden because it’s not “pretty”. Since we’ve started to think of it more as a shared habitat than our garden, it’s developed more and more piles of sticks and dandelions. Lifting pots to find massive spiders and tiny frogs. The garden furniture is tired but it’s functioning, relatable. And I won’t send it to landfill if it works.

Here’s a picture of an undisturbed pile in the background, hidden from the gram like a furry armpit. It’s sitting on what used to be a path. Quietly hoping for a hedgepig to move in and make a nest… we haven’t had one for a couple of years now.

Mission for weekend is to populate the greenhouse with food things, plant more seeds and pot some stuff up. My bones need the shade of a wood and my heart needs to climb a hill and my muscles want time to stay in place here at home.

Hoping this inspires you to share a pic of your compost heap, or similar beautifully unsightly corner that’s actually brimming with life and hope.
