The garden is winding down, but the Ivy is just getting started. 🌿✨

Did you know that Ivy is one of our most sacred autumn plants? While other flora retreats into the earth, Ivy steps up as the Guardian of the Threshold. Its September buds are a vital lifeline, offering a final, precious feast to the bees and pollinators before winter sets in.

In old folklore, it reminds us that there is immense power in blooming late, staying green through the frost, and protecting the life around us.

Ancient green witchery tells us that Ivy flowers provide the final, vital nectar for the bees and woodland spirits before winter locks the earth. It represents fidelity, protection, and the resilience to thrive when everything else fades.

It reminds us that our own blooming doesn’t have to look like anyone else’s season. 🍃

In old domestic folklore, bay leaves were the ultimate guardians of peace and mental clarity. Tucking them under your entrance mat ensured that anyone stepping into your home would figuratively ‘leave their troubles and malice at the door.’ It kept the energy inside your sanctuary completely calm.

As you pop them under your mat you could say;

“Bay beneath the threshold laid,
Keep this hearth in peace arrayed.
Trouble, malice, pass us by,
Only kindly hearts draw nigh.”

October’s Garden, Hearth & Hedgerow is coming to life… and this month, even the envelope has a story to tell. 🖤

Inside, we’re stepping into the darker half of the year with Blackthorn - the fierce old hedgerow guardian woven through folklore, protection, boundaries and the Otherworld.

There’ll be plant folklore, herbal knowledge, seasonal living, old ways and ritual tucked amongst the pages, alongside October’s recipe, collectable pieces and something rather special I’m creating for you to listen to this month… 🌿🎧

I’ve spent today printing these beautiful blue envelopes with ravens, bare October trees, pumpkins, acorns and old lanterns - because I want opening your mail each month to feel like opening a tiny doorway into the season.

October is nearly ready. And she’s looking wonderfully dark around the edges. 🍂🐦‍⬛

These tiny gourds are only a couple of inches big right now, but they’ve just begun their climb.

In old European folklore, planting climbing vines - especially gourds or squash - over an arched entryway or garden gate was done for a very specific reason.

The archway represents a threshold - a portal between the chaotic outside world and the sanctuary of your home. As the gourds climb and weave overhead, they create a living canopy of protection. It was believed that walking underneath a fruiting vine washed away winter worries and brought abundance to anyone who stepped through.

Right now, they look small and delicate, but they are slowly building the strength to hold heavy fruit later in the season. A lovely reminder that the beginnings of magic are always quiet.

I have absolutely loved every second of creating this mail club. ♥️

For my garden lovers, folklore inquisitors, nature admirers and for those with a little witchy soul.

September was my founding month - I have learnt a lot and am sure will continue to! 😬 I am so grateful to each and every one that has messaged me to say how much they love it and for those that are on this beautiful journey with me. I hope we get to share plants seasons and nature together - the old way! The way our ancestors once did. 🎃

October is the build up to Samhain and really takes us deep into the autumnal energies. I’m working with Blackthorn and feeling into what wants to be shared and how to deepen our relationship with her and the earth in a cyclical way.

Well… I finally said the word witchy. 🖤🌿

And actually, it feels rather good.

Because Garden, Hearth & Hedgerow has always been about plants, folklore, the old ways, seasonal living - and yes, a little bit of witchery too.

October’s mail is centred around Blackthorn: the fierce old hedgerow guardian of boundaries, protection and transformation.

But before anything reaches your letterbox, I work with the plant herself.

I spend time with her growing in the landscape. I journey and meditate with her. I research her folklore, history and traditional uses. And when I gather sloes, leaves or thorns to bring home and study, I leave an offering in return.

Then all of that begins finding its way onto my desk - alongside piles of cardstock, envelope samples, old books and probably several cups of tea - as I create October’s mail. 🖤

October enrolment is OPEN NOW, and I have 50 places available.

Last month’s founding members have sent me some absolutely gorgeous feedback, which I’ll be sharing over the next few days.

Bird’s-foot Trefoil might be one of our prettiest little meadow flowers, but over the centuries it has collected an absolutely extraordinary number of local names.

Depending on where you lived, you might have known it as Eggs-and-Bacon, Butter-and-Eggs, Hen-and-Chickens, Tom Thumb, Lady’s Slipper, Devil’s Claws or, in parts of Devon, Granny’s Toenails.

And the names weren’t plucked from thin air.

As the yellow flowers age, they can take on orange and reddish tones, giving us names such as Eggs-and-Bacon. Later come the long, narrow seed pods, clustered together rather like a bird’s foot or a set of claws, hence Bird’s-foot Trefoil, Devil’s Claws and those rather unfortunate granny toenails. 😂

But one of my favourite pieces of folklore comes from southern Ireland.

Children called the flower “No Blame” and would collect it and take it to school in the belief that carrying it would protect them from the teacher’s cane.

A tiny yellow wildflower carried in a pocket against the terrifying prospect of getting into trouble at school. 🌼

And as if this little plant didn’t already have enough personality, in the Victorian language of flowers Bird’s-foot Trefoil was associated with something rather less innocent…

Revenge.

From Granny’s Toenails to schoolchildren’s charms and revenge.

Not bad for a little yellow flower growing quietly in the grass.
