Hi everyone 👋🏻
I thought I'd take a moment to introduce myself. My name is Kirsty, and I'm the new Foundation Trainee Pharmacist based here for my training year.

I recently graduated from Robert Gordon University with my MPharm degree. I'm originally from Inverness but have been visiting the area since I was a child and more recently with my family dog, so I'm fairly familiar with it and really happy to be based here for my training.

At some point during the year I'll be looking for volunteers to help with some of my clinical sign-offs, similar to what Ian was doing earlier this year. I'd really appreciate your support when the time comes.

I'm looking forward to meeting and working with you all!

💊 FANCY GETTING INVOLVED IN ALL THINGS PHARMACY? 👀

As promised… here’s a little more information following our teaser yesterday!

Later this summer/early autumn, one of our wee team will be heading off on maternity leave, so we’re starting to think about how we cover the following 12 months or so.

And the truth is… we haven’t completely decided what that looks like yet!

We’re likely to have around 20 hours a week available, ideally spread across Monday to Wednesday, but there is definitely some flexibility in both the hours and how we structure the role.

So, rather than writing a very formal job advert with a long list of requirements, we thought we’d start by simply asking:

Could you see yourself being part of the Gairloch Pharmacy team?

As everyone who knows us probably knows, our wee pharmacy team takes what we do very seriously — but we try not to take ourselves too seriously! 😊

We work hard for our customers and for each other, but we still find plenty of time for a bit of fun along the way.

We cherish learning new things, learning from each other and exploring new opportunities, and we try hard to give our team flexibility and create a positive place where people enjoy coming to work.

The role could involve a mixture of the dispensary, the shop and generally all things pharmacy. Experience in pharmacy may be useful, but we’re also interested in finding the right person and the right fit. Because we’re still working out exactly how we want to structure the maternity cover, if this sounds even vaguely interesting — or you’re simply curious and wondering “could that work for me?” — please pop into the pharmacy and have an informal chat with us.

You might just be a really good fit for us… and we might be a really good fit for you. 😊

🌟 AND IN OTHER TEAM NEWS…

Next week, we’re delighted to be welcoming Kirsty to Gairloch Pharmacy!

Kirsty has completed her four-year pharmacy degree and will be joining us to undertake her 12-month Foundation Training Year, the next stage on her journey towards becoming a registered pharmacist.

Once she’s had a chance to settle into Highland life, we’re sure you’ll hear a bit more about her.

In the meantime, if you’re passing the pharmacy, be sure to pop your head in and say hello and welcome to Gairloch, Kirsty! 👋😊

Ian and the Gairloch Pharmacy team.

☀️🌊 A wee Highland summer reminder… 🪼

I actually started writing this post last week, in the glorious sunshine, while watching locals and visitors alike wandering barefoot along our beautiful beaches as jellyfish lazily bobbed past in the water.

Looking out of the window today, I'm wondering whether a summer post was perhaps a little optimistic... 🌧️😂

Anywhoose... this is the Highlands! Give it half an hour and we'll probably have sunshine again.

When you are out enjoying our fantastic beaches this summer, just remember that we do share them with a few wee critters that can pack quite a sting. The most common are jellyfish, and occasionally weever fish, which like to bury themselves in the sand in shallow water.

🪼 If you or someone with you gets stung:

• Get out of the water safely if needed.
• Rinse the area with seawater (not fresh water).
• If you can see any tentacles or spines, remove them carefully with tweezers or the edge of a bank card, avoiding touching them with bare hands.
• Soak the area in very warm water (as hot as can comfortably be tolerated) for at least 30 minutes, as this can help relieve the pain.
• Simple pain relief, such as paracetamol or ibuprofen (if appropriate), may also help.

Many of our overseas visitors may have been told that vinegar is the best treatment for jellyfish stings. Advice varies around the world because different species need different treatment, but for the stings we commonly see here in the UK, current NHS advice is seawater followed by very warm water. So perhaps save the vinegar for your fish and chips instead! 🍟😉

Most stings are painful rather than dangerous, but seek urgent medical help if someone develops difficulty breathing, collapses, has severe swelling, or if the sting involves the eyes, mouth or throat.

And finally... 👀

Ever thought you might like to get involved in all things pharmacy? 💊

Well... watch this space.

We might just be looking for someone to join our wee team in the near future...

Enjoy the summer (whenever it decides to arrive!), take care on the beaches, and as always, if you're unsure about a sting, bite or anything else health-related, pop in and have a chat with us.

One year on…..

Today marks one year since Paula and I arrived in this very special wee corner of the Highlands.

Looking back, we just wanted to say a heartfelt thank you to everyone who has welcomed us, encouraged us and shown us such kindness. Your support has meant far more than you probably realise—not just to us personally, but also to the whole pharmacy team.

We often say that we're incredibly lucky to work in what must be the pharmacy with the best views in the Highlands (and we're not sure many could argue with that! 😊). Every day we're reminded just how fortunate we are to be here.

Those views set the bar pretty high, and our aim is to make sure the service we provide matches them. We may not always get everything perfect, but we'll always keep listening, learning and doing everything we can to provide the very best care and service for our community.
