🎙️ Chronic Pain Management Doesn't Have to Be Uncomfortable

A valuable reminder that pain management is evolving beyond the old "no pain, no gain" mindset.

In this insightful conversation, Ben Calder sits down with Eileen Kopsaftis, founder of Have Lifelong Wellbeing to explore why chronic pain is often influenced by far more than tissue damage alone.

They discuss the role of the nervous system, stress, movement patterns and the body's protective responses in persistent pain and explore what Eileen believes are the four pillars of health and the movement model she uses to support clients and students to help people better understand and manage chronic pain.

There are valuable insights here for anyone seeking a deeper understanding of chronic health and wellbeing.

One particularly important topic is the connection between nutrition, systemic inflammation and long-term pain. Eileen explains how dietary factors can contribute to chronic inflammation and persistent pain, particularly in the back.

🔑 Key Takeaways
• Effective treatment doesn't always require deep pressure or painful techniques.
• Gentle, targeted interventions can help the body relax and reset.
• Chronic pain is complex and requires a whole-person approach.
• Supporting recovery, movement and nervous system regulation can be just as important as treating symptoms.
• Long-term change often comes from working with the body rather than forcing it.

The intricate nervous system - beautifully illustrated

The nervous system is an intricate network — not a switch to be flipped, but a system to be respected.

Bowen Therapy takes a gentle, considered approach, offering light, precise moves followed by intentional pauses.

This creates space for the body to process information and reorganise itself naturally, as best it's able.

Sometimes, meaningful change can begin with doing less — not more.

This has always fascinated me and it certainly intrigued those who attended my workshop on Saturday!

Pain has a way of demanding attention.

But as practitioners, we know that what draws attention first isn't always what provides the most useful information.

The body adapts, compensates, and reorganises continuously.

Sometimes the bigger picture reveals more than the obvious starting point.

Recently had a Bowen session?
Don’t forget the aftercare!

• Drink plenty of water&
• Keep gently moving &
• Avoid long periods of sitting still

💦 Water - As a result of Bowen, the body increases blood supply to nerve endings and affects the movement of lymph around the body. The effective functioning of these systems is entirely reliant on sufficient fluids. Fluid intake is therefore essential following a Bowen treatment.

🚶🏻‍♀️Movement - Bowen helps the body to eliminate waste. Getting up and moving on the day of your session, assists with the movement of lymph, around the body. Lymph removes all kinds of debris from the system, as well as moving fluid. It doesn’t have its own pump, so the lymphatic system relies on regular movement and muscular contraction.

Following this simple Bowen aftercare advice, will give your body the best possible opportunity to repair and rebalance.

Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS) can have a real impact on daily life - from discomfort and bloating to ongoing stress and fatigue.

The Bowen Technique offers a gentle, whole-body approach that may help support those living with IBS. By working through the fascia and encouraging relaxation of the nervous system, Bowen aims to help reduce overall tension in the body - something that can play a role in digestive health.

While not a treatment or cure for IBS, Bowen can be a supportive therapy, helping the body find balance and encouraging a sense of calm.
