QUANTITY OVER QUALITY?
When you have chronic pain, we often get caught up worrying about whether weâre moving âcorrectly.â
Is my technique perfect?
Am I moving the right way?
Is there too much stress going through my joints?
Yes, quality movement matters.
But in the early stages of chronic pain, quantity often matters more.
Think about movement in everyday life.
There is no such thing as perfect movement.
You donât think about the perfect technique when you get out of a chair, walk to the kitchen, climb the stairs or pick something up.
You just move.
And thatâs exactly what we want to encourage when you're dealing with chronic pain.
Our first goal isnât to make every movement look perfect.
Itâs to get you moving. And moving more frequently.
Walking.
Getting up and down.
Strength exercises.
Mobility.
Playing with the kids.
Doing the things you enjoy.
Even if it doesnât look perfect.
The more you move, the more opportunities your body has to improve your fitness, strength, mobility, confidence, pain tolerance and overall health.
However, this doesnât mean technique and movement patterns donât matter.
As you progress, dialling in your technique and working on more efficient movement patterns can become really important.
But we donât want the pursuit of perfect technique to stop you from moving altogether.
You can spend weeks waiting to be shown the âperfectâ movement patternâŚ
Or you can start moving now and improve as you go.
So if youâre worried about your technique or whether your movement looks amazing - DONâT.
Start with more movement.
Then, over time, we can build on that movement, improve your technique, increase your strength and make you more capable of doing the things you want to do.
Movement is the goal. Perfect movement isnât.
