Are your employees actually getting the hearing protection you think they are?

Providing hearing protection is only the first step. The protection achieved in practice can vary significantly from one person to another, depending on how the earplug is fitted, the wearer’s technique and the suitability of the product.
The hearing protection fit test system that we are considering adding to our services, allows us to measure the level of protection achieved by each individual wearer.

The system can help employers to:
✅ Measure the wearer’s actual level of attenuation
✅ Identify poor or inconsistent fitting techniques
✅ Check whether the selected hearing protection is suitable
✅ Educate employees through practical, individual training
✅ Reduce the risks associated with under-protection and over-protection
✅ Create a documented record of the protection achieved

Two employees may wear the same earplugs—but receive very different levels of protection.

Hearing protection fit testing replaces assumptions with measurable evidence, helping businesses make better-informed decisions while giving employees greater confidence in the equipment they rely on.

RPE2Fit is currently assessing interest in adding hearing protection fit testing to our range of occupational safety services.

“We have stopped dangerous work with engineered stone in four workplaces due to serious failures in providing correct controls”

Inspections have resulted in these four enforcement notices being served as of the end of May as part of the 1,000 inspections that will be conducted across Great Britain.

The risks of engineered stone and silicosis can be safely managed with the right controls, this includes:

◼️on-tool water suppression
◼️mist control
◼️respiratory protective equipment
◼️regular health surveillance.

Silica is the silent killer. Keep yourself and your teams SAFE.

HSE inspectors have ordered four businesses to stop working with engineered stone after finding serious failures to control silica dust.

Without proper protections, workers risk developing silicosis, a disease caused by breathing in fine dust generated during cutting and processing.

Inspections found a lack of basic safeguards, including:

- Inadequate ventilation.
- Poor use of respiratory protective equipment.
- Failures to carry out health surveillance.

Effective measures to control dangerous silica dust were not in place despite clear guidance across the industry on how these risks must be managed.

No worker should lose their life to a lung disease caused by their job and employers must make sure these controls are in place and working.

Silica is the biggest risk to construction workers after asbestos.

According to HSE estimates, exposure to respirable crystalline silica (RCS) contributed to the deaths of over 500 construction workers from lung cancer - with thousands more affected by serious respiratory diseases including COPD and silicosis.

The danger is often invisible.

Cutting, drilling, grinding, sanding, and chasing materials like concrete, brick, mortar, and stone can all release hazardous silica dust into the air.

Awareness, dust control, and correctly fitted RPE are critical.

ACS and RPE2FIT LTD are working together on a new joint training programme focused on silica dust awareness, risk control, and respiratory protection.

Using water reduces harmful dust that's released when engineered stone is cut, ground or polished. No work should be done dry.

Mains-fed water is preferable for hand finishing, if you use recirculated water there are extra checks and maintenance required to keep bacteria and silica levels under control.
