If you're spending hours each night coaxing your baby back to sleep it might be time to stop fighting and take a look at the bigger picture.

It is normal for babies to wake during the night and for them to need help and support getting back to sleep but how often they are waking and how long they are awake for is the important part.

Taking 15 mins to fall asleep and waking every few hours for a feed or cuddle but settling back to sleep within 10 minutes is likely developmentally normal and if it feels manageable then there's no need to try and fix it.

On the other hand, taking 2+ hours to go to sleep at bedtime, waking hourly, up for 90 mins in the middle of the night, starting the day at 4.50 am. This type of broken sleep is what leaves parents feeling unable to cope but the good news is, it's more likely to be due to factors we can control. Things like how tired they are (do they have enough sleep pressure), are they getting sufficient time to wind down in order to feel relaxed enough to fall asleep? Are they hungry, cold, being disturbed by noise, light or another external factor?

Chances are you don't need to overhaul your entire routine, often you just need to make some small tweaks to work with your babies natural sleep system rather than fighting against it.

If you need a little guidance to figure out what might be causing your little ones wakes comment SLEEP and I'll send you my free night wakes guide or DM to book in for a 45 min 1:1 Wee Sleep Sorter consultation.

The reality:

There is no peace and quiet
The sitting lasts 35 seconds before someone needs something
The coffee is there but it's not hot and it's probably not getting finished
I live in Scotland so the sun isn't visible most mornings

Having a morning routine that compliments your ability to sleep well is important but it has to be realistic to your lifestyle otherwise you are just setting yourself up to fail.

Taking an ideal routine and adapting it to work for you is far more likely to actually stick so if your life is more chaos than calm right now don't let that stop you trying to make things better.

For me:

My priorities in the morning are caffeine and daylight.

If I can sit outside at the backdoor I will but most mornings just opening the blinds and getting some natural daylight is enough.

Standing at the kitchen window, sipping coffee, while making the kids breakfast and answering questions about my favourite dinosaur or unicorn is generally my norm.

It's not Instagram perfect but it's practical and it's effective.

Don't try to overcomplicate, keep things simple and achievable for the phase of life you are in!

I took an impromptu break from social media and decided to enjoy a few weeks off for summer.

A sensible organised business owner would have planned for this in advance and batched some content to keep things ticking over but as much as I would love to be that person I'm definitely more of a wing it and see kinda gal.

I had only planned to take a few days off initially but then I remembered my whole reason for creating my own business was to give me flexibility around my kids. The joy of being able to take time off without having to ask permission and get to live in the moment.

We've had a great few weeks, the sun has been shining, I managed to get abroad for a few days with my mum, we've had family BBQs, trips to the beach with friends, playparks, dinosaur adventures and a stay at Ribby Hall full of family fun.

It's just over half way through the summer holidays and while I'm planning on a bit more work and a bit less play the next few weeks, I still want to take the time to enjoy being in the moment so my social media will likely still be inconsistent and a bit of an after thought as I prioritise my actual client work during working hours and focus on time with friends and family when not working. Other small business owners will appreciate the constant ni**le of "I should be creating social media posts" that rarely lets you fully shut off from work so it's not that I don't care about my business or don't want new clients but I'm trying to find that elusive balance!

Sending love to everyone else trying to juggle it all 💜

Early nights absolutely have a role and can work wonders for an already tired child but if your child has a regular bedtime and no major issues with their sleep, putting them to bed early to compensate for an early start will often cause more problems than it solves.

The main thing to remember is that holidays are supposed to be enjoyed, yes routines might go out the window and sleep may take a hit but as long as you get back into your normal routine once the holiday is over, your child's sleep will likely fall back into routine too.

If you need any support preparing for holidays or recovering from disrupted sleep, I'm happy to review your current routine and guide you to make improvements.

Consultations start from £60, DM for details
