⚫️ SCRUBS OFF. GLAM ON. ⚫️

A little glimpse of me outside the surgery…

Most days you’ll find me in scrubs, behind a camera or talking about teeth but I’ll always love an excuse to get properly dressed up. This weekend was all about celebrating, spending time with some of my favourite people and, of course, going full glam for the occasion. 🥂✨

Back to creating smiles tomorrow… but I do quite like this side of the camera too. 🦷

♟️ DEAD TOOTH. MAJOR COMEBACK ♟️

This lateral incisor had experienced trauma in the past, causing the nerve inside to die and the tooth to gradually become darker.

When discolouration comes from inside a tooth, ordinary whitening alone isn’t always enough.

So instead of covering the whole smile, we treated only what needed treating:

🦷 Carefully whitening from the inside and outside to lift the deeper discolouration
✨ A small, same-day composite veneer to refine the remaining colour, shape and surface

The goal wasn’t to create an obviously “perfect” tooth.. it was to create one that simply stopped catching the eye.

No full smile of veneers. No dramatic redesign. Just some whitening, a little composite and one previously dark tooth brought beautifully back into the smile.

Sometimes the smallest treatments make the biggest difference! This case was an absolute pleasure!

😵‍💫 SORRY 😵‍💫

“Sorry, I’m such a nervous patient.”

I hear this so often and honestly, you never need to say sorry.

There are no prizes for being the easiest patient in the chair. You don’t have to hide that you’re scared, explain how long it’s been or feel embarrassed about your teeth.

My job is to meet you exactly where you are: to listen first, explain things clearly and create a plan that feels manageable for you.

No lectures. No judgement. No conveyor belt.

Sometimes being brave doesn’t mean feeling calm. Sometimes it’s simply booking the appointment you’ve been avoiding and walking through the door anyway.

You’re not difficult. You’re human. We’ll take it one step at a time.

What is one thing that would make visiting the dentist feel easier for you? Let’s talk about it!

🖌️ THE ART OF NOT OVER CORRECTING 🖌️

This patient wanted a smile that looked lighter, cleaner and more polished without anyone knowing they’d had composite bonding.

The brief was very specific: keep the spaces, rotations, crowding and character of the original smile. No perfectly aligned teeth. No identical shapes. No making the teeth wider or bulkier simply to disguise their position.

And that is exactly what makes a case like this so technically challenging.

When teeth are rotated or crowded, every tooth sits at a different angle. Light reflects differently from each surface, the visible widths don’t necessarily match the true widths, and the contact points, embrasures and line angles are all unique.

Textbook anatomy can’t simply be copied onto every tooth.

The composite has to respect how each tooth naturally emerges within the smile. Add too much in the wrong area and a rotated tooth can immediately look bulky. Move a line angle by a fraction and the tooth can suddenly appear wider, flatter or artificially straight. Over-correct the embrasures or close every space and the character of the smile disappears completely.

So rather than trying to “correct” the crowding, I worked with it, carefully layering and shaping the composite to follow the existing rotations, proportions and individual anatomy.

No identical square teeth.
No artificial symmetry.
No smile transformed beyond recognition.

Just the same smile. Lighter, fresher and beautifully refined.

Composite bonding doesn’t always have to straighten, enlarge or completely redesign a smile. Sometimes the real skill lies in knowing what not to change.

Invisible dentistry. Visible confidence.

🩺 FOCUS 🩺

I’m usually far too focused on what’s next to properly take in moments like this.

The next patient.
The next course.
The next qualification.
The next version of myself I’m trying to become.

But seeing this photograph made me stop.

Standing at the front of that room, sharing something I genuinely believe in with the people who shape a patient’s experience every single day. That meant more to me than I probably showed at the time.

I didn’t take the most straightforward route into dentistry, and there were plenty of moments when this version of my life felt very far away.

Now I get to treat, learn, create and occasionally stand behind a lectern and teach.

There is still so much I want to achieve, but perhaps I need to become better at acknowledging the moments I once would have dreamed about.

The younger version of me would be very proud of this one.

And I think I am too.

🎥 THE LATERAL INCISOR SHOW 🎥

This little lateral was taking centre stage for all the wrong reasons…

Previous trauma had caused the nerve inside the tooth to die. Although the tooth had been successfully root canal treated, it had gradually darkened from within, leaving one discoloured tooth standing out against the rest of an otherwise beautiful smile.

So, we gave her the full glow-up:
• Internal bleaching to brighten the tooth from the inside
• External whitening to balance the overall smile
• A same-day composite veneer to disguise the remaining darkness, refine the shape and create a seamless finish

Treating a single dark tooth is no easy task. The underlying discolouration has to be blocked without making the restoration look too white, opaque or flat. It’s all about balancing opacity, translucency, value, texture and shape so the final result blends naturally with the neighbouring teeth.

The goal wasn’t to make this lateral disappear.. it was to let her take centre stage for the right reasons.

No crown. No porcelain veneer. No aggressive drilling. Just a carefully planned, minimally invasive combination of whitening and layered composite.

One little lateral. One major glow-up.

Happy patient, happy dentist!

📓 EDUCATION 📓

A brilliant weekend in London with the Fresh Dental Institute for my PGDip in Restorative & Aesthetic Dentistry, exploring the art of communication and dental photography.

Because beautiful dentistry begins long before any treatment does. It starts with listening, understanding what matters to each patient and communicating the possibilities clearly. Photography then allows us to see the finer details, plan with precision and bring patients into every stage of their smile journey.

These are already such important parts of how I practise, but there is always more to learn, refine and feel confident in, and I loved every minute of it.

Feeling inspired, excited and already looking forward to the next session!

🤍 BEST BRIDE VIBES 🤍

Lisa brought all the vibes, absolutely no red flags, and was quite simply an unreal patient from beginning to end!

This was far from a straightforward “replace a few composites” case. She came to me with older composite restorations that first needed to be carefully stripped back, allowing us to assess the underlying tooth structure properly before rebuilding her smile from a clean, considered foundation.

Lisa also has a Class III bite with an anterior crossbite. This creates a very different and much less forgiving pattern of forces across the front teeth. It’s the type of case some clinicians may understandably shy away from, because creating something beautiful is only half the job: it also needs to function within the patient’s existing bite.

We (the royal we, that’s me and my AI software) carefully assessed where the greatest stresses and wear would occur, planned each restoration around those forces and deliberately selected materials with the strength and wear resistance needed for the bite. Every detail was considered to create a result that felt beautifully natural while respecting her underlying occlusion. This was then relayed back to the technician to replicate exactly what we wanted!

I genuinely love treating brides and grooms ahead of their wedding day. Whether it involves whitening, replacing older dentistry, composite bonding or a completely bespoke smile plan, there is something incredibly special about being trusted with such an important part of someone’s preparations.

Good vibes in the chair and even better results afterwards are my absolute favourite combination!

Lisa, thank you for trusting me with your smile. I will never take that trust for granted, and I cannot wait to share the full reveal I know you hate this before photo (which I think you look beautiful in), but just look at you in that after! WOW!

Are you a 2027 bride/groom? Let’s get to work? I promise you it’s just as important as the dress/kilt!

🎙️ WALKING THE WALK TO TALKING THE TALK 🎙️

I’ve been incredibly fortunate to teach and share my knowledge with other dentists, but this one felt a little different.

Speaking at the Clyde Munro Conference about the patient journey gave me the opportunity to speak to the people who shape that journey at every stage: reception teams, dental nurses, TCOs, managers, clinicians and the wider dental team.

And it’s a subject that means a lot to me, because I’ve genuinely walked the walk.

I started my career in dentistry on reception, before working as a dental nurse, TCO, dental technician, dental therapist and eventually qualifying as a dentist. I’ve seen the patient journey from almost every side of the practice and one thing has become increasingly clear:

Exceptional dentistry is never delivered by one person.

A beautiful smile may be the part I photograph, but the patient’s experience started long before they sat in the chair. It’s built through every phone call, every welcome, every reassuring conversation, every handover and every member of the team who makes someone feel that they are genuinely being looked after.

Being able to teach dentists is something I’m hugely grateful for, but having the opportunity to lecture to and hopefully inspire the whole dental team felt particularly special.

Because when every person understands the impact they can have on a patient’s experience, that’s when good dental care becomes exceptional. 🦷✨

Thank you Clyde Munro Dental Group for giving me the platform to tell that story and to every member of the dental team who makes a patient’s journey better, often without ever realising just how much of a difference they made. 🦷✨
