It’s easy to look at someone else’s life and assume they have it better. We see their success, recognition, wealth, relationships, or lifestyle, and think to ourselves, “I wish I had what they have.”
That’s human. But what we’re usually admiring is a highlight reel or a projection of our own assumptions, not a whole human being. It’s like social media. We see a carefully curated snapshot and assume it tells the full story.
The entrepreneur on the magazine cover may be financially free, yet unable to sleep through the night, constantly busy, or forever trying to prove their worth. The celebrity may have influence and admiration, yet struggle with loneliness, anxiety, or a loss of privacy. The executive with the impressive title may spend more time traveling than being present with their family.
Even when someone appears genuinely happy and fulfilled, we rarely see the road that brought them there. The setbacks, sacrifices, failures, heartbreaks, and difficult seasons that shaped their journey are often hidden from view.
When we envy someone, we usually want the rewards they have. We want their success, opportunities, confidence, and accomplishments. What we rarely mean is that we want their entire life.
Because if trading places meant inheriting everything that comes with it, like their fears, insecurities, family dynamics, private struggles, disappointments, responsibilities, pressures, and emotional wounds, we might think twice.
And if you still find yourself thinking, “I’d take that deal,” remember that you wouldn’t just inherit the destination. You would inherit the journey too.
You would have to live through the same setbacks, disappointments, sacrifices, losses, and difficult seasons that shaped them. You would need to carry the same pressures, face the same uncertainties, and walk through the same experiences that brought them to where they are today.
Suddenly, trading places doesn’t sound as appealing. That’s why, instead of wishing for another person’s life, focus on creating a life that feels aligned with your values. Admire what inspires you, learn from what resonates, but remember that every life carries a price tag that isn’t immediately visible.
