Cleavers (*Galium aparine*)โoften called "Sticky W***y" or "Goosegrass" here in the UKโis one of the most underrated stars of the hedgerow.
They are a literal gift from the earth, especially during their peak in spring.
In the context of my **Nourished Spirit** work, cleavers are the ultimate "spring clean" for the body and soul.
Here are the primary health benefits:
1. The Ultimate Lymphatic Tonic
Cleavers are arguably the best lymphatic tonic in herbal medicine. They help move "stagnant" energy and fluid.
Swollen Glands: They help drain the lymph nodes and are often used for tonsillitis or glandular fever.
Fluid Retention: As a mild diuretic, they help the body shed excess water weight and reduce puffiness.
2. Kidney and Urinary Support
They are cooling and soothing to the urinary tract.
Detoxification: By encouraging the kidneys to flush out toxins, they support the "Nourished" aspect of your practiceโclearing out the old to make room for the new.
UTI Relief: Their anti-inflammatory properties can help soothe the lining of the bladder.
3. "Skin Deep" Healing
In herbalism, we say "the skin is the third kidney." Because cleavers clear the internal filters (lymph and kidneys), the results often show on the skin.
Chronic Conditions: They are traditionally used for psoriasis, eczema, and acne.
Cooling: They take the "heat" out of angry, red skin rashes.
4. Spiritual & Energetic Benefits
Letting Go: Just as they "stick" to everything, they remind us to look at what we are clinging to that no longer serves us.
Flow: Energetically, they encourage the "flow" of life force (Prana or Qi) where it has become stuck or sluggish.
Cold Infusion (The Best Way):
Since heat can destroy some of their medicinal properties, chop fresh cleavers and soak them in cold water overnight. Strain and serve as a "Green Wisdom" morning tonic.
Succus (Juice) Blend them with a little water and strain for a potent shot of chlorophyll and minerals.
Topical Poultice: For skin irritations, the crushed fresh herb can be applied directly to the skin.
A Note of Caution
While generally very safe, because they are a diuretic, people on blood pressure or diabetes me
