The sunshine has finally arrived, and with it comes the usual mix of family days out, picnics, and, occasionally, a little too much sun.

These are five remedies I like to have on hand during hot weather:

Sol
One of the first remedies I think of for the effects of too much sun. It can be helpful after prolonged sun exposure, particularly if someone is feeling the effects of heat exhaustion or sunstroke. Severe heatstroke is a medical emergency, so always seek urgent medical attention if you are concerned.

Arnica montana
Summer seems to come with its fair share of bumps, falls and bruises. Whether it's children climbing trees or bike accidents Arnica is rarely far from my remedy kit.

Apis mellifica
Perfect to think of for insect bites and stings, or skin that is red, swollen, hot and relieved by something cold. It's one of those remedies that earns its place in every summer first aid kit.

Cantharis
A wonderful remedy for burns, including sunburn where the skin feels intensely hot, painful or blistered. As always, significant burns should be medically assessed.

Natrum muriaticum
A useful remedy for headaches brought on by the heat or after spending too long in the sun, particularly where dehydration has played a part.

Homeopathy isn't about treating "sunburn" or "heat". It's about recognising how an individual is responding and choosing the remedy that best matches that picture.

Which remedy never leaves your summer remedy kit?

Homeopathy is not just for people

Here I'm using Lac Leo, a remedy made from lion's milk, to deter cats from digging up my garden and also Helix Tosta to stop slugs chewing on my plants.

Years ago I began to notice that whenever my son was in a chlorinated pool he'd come out sneezing and with red eyes every time.

I started to give him Chlorine in potency, Chlorinum, 30c as soon as he came out of the pool. The sneezing stopped and he was able to swim in peace.

If you notice that you done feel quite yourself after being in a pool, then definitely try some Chlorinum.

One of my favourite summer habits is starting the day with a jug of lemon, cucumber and mint water (though I have run out of cucumber today so I'm doing without it!). I usually add a pinch of good quality sea salt too.

Lemon adds a little vitamin C and gives the water a fresh, clean taste. Cucumber is naturally hydrating and cooling, while mint can be soothing for digestion and makes the whole thing feel that bit more refreshing. The pinch of sea salt helps replace electrolytes, especially on warmer days or after exercise.

I always use room temperature or tepid water rather than ice cold. It's generally easier for the body to absorb, gentler on digestion, and I find I'm much more likely to drink it throughout the day.

Now, if I could just master the art of keeping the mint plant alive for more than a fortnight, I'd really have this summer routine perfected.

Do you have a favourite summer drink or are you guilty of accidentally finishing off every herb plant you bring home?
