Global Therapies is a Physiotherapy, Sports and Remedial Massage and Personal Training business, with its heart firmly in the Peak District. Our therapists are highly active runners, cyclists and climbers. Past experience of desk based jobs and an active lifestyle enables us to talk with authority on sports based injuries as well as work induced repetitive strain issues. We work with all kinds of

people from elite athletes in the running, cycling, lifting and figure athlete disciplines, to daily joggers, club level runners and desk bound office workers. Are you a bit concerned that if you see a health professional – be it a doctor or a therapist – they will just fob you off with the catch all “well, if it hurts, don’t do it” phrase? See the Therapists page on our website for more about the way we work.

Hello September 🍂

Will we see another heatwave this month? We hope so as we’re about to head off on a bike adventure to Belgium. Huge thanks to our cat‑loving friend staying home to look after Tigg while we’re away.

We’re out for the first half of September, then back for the final two weeks. If you don’t get chance to book in before we leave, you can pre‑book your Physio or Sports Massage appointment now and secure your slot for later in the month.

And if you’ve been thinking about starting Personal Training, there are 18 weeks left in 2026. That's plenty of time to make a massive shift in your physical and mental health.

Research shows that strength training improves insulin sensitivity, reduces blood pressure, increases bone density, lowers inflammation, and even reduces symptoms of depression and anxiety. Muscle‑strengthening work is also linked with a 10–17% lower risk of all‑cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and total cancer.

A weekly training session builds consistency, confidence, and real momentum. Small steps, Big changes.

Let September be the month you commit, and let Autumn show you what consistency can do.

Wrist Strengthening
Having had a consultation and x-ray for my wrist, I'm now waiting for an MRI and Fluroscopy. That doesn't mean I'm going to sit here and not do anything though.

The main thing I can definitely do to make a difference to my wrist stability, no matter what happens, is to strengthen it.

Although I know about wrists, and I know about strength work, there are others who *really* know this stuff.

Thanks to Arm Wrestling champ and all-round wrist strength guru for his superb youtube videos on specific strength. (and of course, thanks to who drew my attention to Devon's educational tips).

I might be a physio, but there are some superb strength tips out there if you know where to look.

Equally, I'm very much aware that having not done much of this specific training means that jumping in with both feet (as it were) holds a bunch of interesting and exciting risks as well. Varying overuse injuries such as tendinopathies and tenosynovitis's are lurking.

Training is key, and consistency is well rewarded. But equally, at the beginning of the journey, not overtraining is absolutely essential.

If you want to be strong for real life, you have to train for it.

Ball slams build the power, strength and control that make outdoor jobs feel easier, and your body feel capable.

Gym strength → life strength.

Good to be pedalling together and proof having an adventure doesn't have to be for long or far away.

Less than 24hrs for our latest bike packing adventure to Macclesfield. Grateful to our friends Andy Booth and family for the hospitality and garden to camp in.

When I (Tim) started Sports Massage 15 years ago, I knew there was the potential for long term injuries and problems with my wrist and thumbs. We were told "if you get through the first 2 years without chronic injury, you'll be able to make a career out of it.

In the last few years I noticed my right wrist mobility getting worse in certain positions - and it started clicking a lot when treating people, or when lifting weights.

I learned all I could about wrists - the Pulvertaft clinic videos online have been an excellent resource. However, as the excellent clinicians behind those videos point out - you can't assess your own wrist, and any attempt to self diagnose is fraught with pitfalls.

And so yesterday I went to see one of those clinicians , Mr. Carlos Herez-Palou.

Having watched his videos, I was fairly familiar with the flow of his assessments, and having thought about my answers to his questions previously, was able to give as much pertinent information as I could. I now have a couple of lovely x-rays showing the bones in good alignment, with good borders and boundaries - but showing a couple of artifacts which might well be a part of the problem.

The next part is going to be an MRI and possibly a Fluoroscopy - which will be quite interesting.

For the moment, the nice thing to know is that the bones in my wrist, although painful - are not worn away or doing anything particularly worrisome - even though it might feel like it. I'm looking forward to having an action plan to help stabilise the wrist.

Invest in your health - invest in yourself.

The alternative to lifting weights and exercising isn't pretty. The decline of my grandmas health and mobility, her loss of independence and reliance on others is what drives me to stay strong and healthy.

Active Recovery: What and Why?

Active Recovery is still moving, but with reduced intensity and duration, or doing a different activity to your main sport

Active Recovery days are when your body adapts (i.e. when strength really builds), and, reduces the risk of injury occurring.

Training hard all the time increases injury risk and fatigue. Your training is actually less effective in the long term.

You can’t train hard if you’re sore, over tired and aching from intense sessions.

Active Recovery days keep you fresh so you can show up week in week out, and reach your target event in a strong position.
Having a training plan isn’t about doing everything. It’s about balance, allowing adaption time, getting stronger and staying injury free.
If you’re training consistently but not seeing the results you hope, message me. Personal Training could be the answer.
