I shall now explain the Wondrous Scripture of the Heart-Seal of the Supreme Jade Emperor section by section, as follows:

“The superior medicine has three grades: Spirit, Qi, and Essence.”

As for Spirit: it is One—one, and therefore numinous.
As for Qi: it is Two—the two, and therefore
transformation.
As for Essence: it is Three—Spirit and Qi unite and give birth to Essence, and thus there are three.

Since these are called the “superior medicine,” they clearly cannot be postcelestial things, but must without doubt be the precelestial Original Spirit, Original Qi, and Original Essence.

Speaking in distinction, the postcelestial spirit, qi, and essence are: the cognitive spirit, the spirit of thought and deliberation, the qi of breathing, and the essence of sexual in*******se and stimulation.

These are not the same as the precelestial three.

• when one Yang line is born, it is Earth-Thunder Fu ䷗ (Return);
• when two Yang lines are born, it is Earth-Lake Lin ䷒ (Approach);
• when three Yang lines are born, it is Heaven-Earth Tai ䷊ (Peace);
• when four Yang lines are born, it is Thunder-Heaven Dazhuang ䷡ (Great Power);
• when five Yang lines are born, it is Lake-Heaven Guai ䷪ (Breakthrough);
• when it reaches six Yang lines, it is Qian ䷀.
Indeed, Kun is the hexagram of emptiness.

From emptiness and non-being are born one, two, three, four, five, and six, until one reaches Qian; thus one is able to recover the body of pure Yang.

The sequence of hexagrams beginning with Fu ䷗ and ending with Qian ䷀ therefore represents a gradual rebirth of original Yang. This is one of the central symbolic structures of inner alchemy. The practitioner does not leap from fragmentation to perfect wholeness in a single crude jump. Even if the principle is one, the recovery is usually progressive. From the field of emptiness, the first spark of restored life appears; then it grows, strengthens, stabilizes, expands, and finally becomes complete. The whole process can be read as an image of spiritual gestation.

When a student “enters the chamber,” spirit and qi rely upon each other; they are forged into a single whole. After long practice one returns to the undifferentiated, entering the land of “there is nothing whatever.” This is “not a single thought arises”—at that time one can observe the subtlety.

Yet one should extinguish the stirring mind, not extinguish the illuminating mind: wise yet like the foolish; possessing insight yet not using it. Within “not knowing and not perceiving,” there is still its perceiving. It is completely natural, without adding anything; and the body of illumination shines brilliantly. This is “one intention not scattered”—at that time one can observe the apertures.

Our subtle aperture—our wondrous aperture—is precisely the Mystic Pass (xuanguan, ⽞關). The Mystic Pass is the most mysterious, most subtle mechanism between Heaven and Earth.
