Some traditions stay with you.

For resident George, 89, Aldershot matchdays have been part of life since he was young. After passing his driving test at 22, going to matches became a regular ritual, often with a friend who lived nearby. The football mattered, of course, but so did everything around it. The journey there. The crowd. The food from the stands. The feeling of being back somewhere familiar.

Recently, George was supported by Brownscombe Care Residences to return to that matchday tradition once again.

With the sun shining, his trusted Aldershot hat firmly in place, and Carer Anna and Maintenance Manager Prince by his side, George was able to take in the sights, sounds and atmosphere that have meant so much to him over the years.

He even joked that the team may not have been quite as strong as he remembered, but he enjoyed every minute.

For us, this is what meaningful care looks like. It is knowing the person, not just the care plan. It is listening to the stories that have shaped someone’s life, then finding ways to keep those connections alive. George’s face said everything. This was about helping him return to something that has been part of his life for so many years.

A very special day for George, and a lovely reminder that the things people love should never be left behind.

Dementia is often spoken about as memory loss. Families know it reaches much further than that.

It can change the pace of a morning. The confidence to go out. The way a conversation begins. The patience needed around a meal. The courage it takes to visit when you are not sure what kind of day it will be.

At CHD Living, Dementia Action Week feels very close to home because this is the reality our teams, residents and families live alongside every day.

It is the daughter learning how to have the same conversation again, with love.

The husband sitting beside the person he has known for decades, even when the words come and go.

The resident who settles when someone remembers the right song, the right mug, the right seat, the right way to say hello.

Good dementia care is built in those details. It needs skill, patience and proper understanding, but it also needs time. Time to know the person behind the diagnosis. Time to notice what helps. Time to support families who are trying to make sense of change while still holding onto the person they love.

Across CHD Living, from our specialist dementia services to our Tea & Talk cafés in the community, we see how much difference the right support can make.

Dementia may change parts of someone’s world, but it does not make their story smaller.

Today, Brownscombe Care Residency and Surrey Heights welcomed friends, families, and our local community to Brownscombe to celebrate Multicultural Day. 🌍

It was a fantastic afternoon filled with music, dancing, laughter, and delicious food from different cultures, including shawarma, Bulgarian dishes, and fresh Greek salads. Many residents, staff, and guests wore traditional clothing representing their culture, making the celebration even more special and meaningful.

We were also proud to welcome two members of the Jamia Ahmadiyya School, our neighbours here at Brownscombe, who kindly wrote everyone’s names in Arabic for residents and guests to keep.

At CHD Living, celebrating culture, community, and happiness is incredibly important to us, and today was a wonderful reminder of how special it is to bring people together.

We’re delighted to share that CHD Living has been shortlisted for the Dementia Friendly Community Project Award at the Dementia Care Awards 2026.

The recognition is for our Tea & Talk Café programme, a dementia friendly community initiative created to bring people living with dementia, carers and older residents together in a relaxed, welcoming space.

Tea & Talk first launched in Haslemere, led by team members from Brownscombe Care Residences and Surrey Heights Dementia Care Centre. It was designed to feel simple and accessible: no referral, no booking, no pressure. Just tea, coffee, homemade cake and conversation, with experienced support nearby for anyone who needs it.

What makes it special is the way people help shape the space themselves. Those living with dementia, and their carers, are sharing stories, forming friendships, welcoming others and helping to create a place that feels safe, familiar and genuinely connected.

One resident, Deseree Arnold, described it beautifully: “Tea and Talk Café is more than just tea and cake… a place where people can feel understood, welcomed and connected.”

With Tea & Talk now also introduced in Godalming, we are proud to see this small but meaningful idea grow into a wider community connection.

A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the cafés so far, including our residents, families, carers, team members, Haslemere Town Council, the Mayor of Haslemere, Rev Adam Payne and Godalming United Church, and the Town Mayor and Consort of Godalming, Cllr Paul Rivers and Cllr Penny Rivers. Your support has helped make Tea & Talk feel like a true community space.

Surrey Heights Dementia Care Centre is proud to be supporting the Godalming & Villages Community Store in Farncombe with regular monthly food and essentials donations.

Recently, Jean Pascal Toussaint and Charlotte Wareham visited the store with a collection from Surrey Heights, including cuppa soups, tins, milkshakes, toiletries and other items that can make a real difference to local people and families.

The Community Store provides a QR code with an up to date shopping list, helping supporters see exactly what is most needed at that time. It is such a simple and thoughtful way of making sure every donation is useful, practical and genuinely needed.

At CHD Living, being part of a community means looking beyond our own front doors. It means noticing where support is needed, building local relationships, and doing what we can, consistently and with care.

A huge thank you to the team at Surrey Heights Dementia Care Centre for leading this monthly donation drive, and to the Godalming & Villages Community Store for the important work they do for the local community.

“Mental health matters every day, and so does kindness in care. This Mental Health Awareness Week, we’re reminded to look out for one another and create a place where everyone feels truly valued, supported, and heard. Together, we make a difference in someone’s life!” - Krasi Petrova, Manager at Crest Lodge Care Centre

At CHD Living, we see what sits behind those words.

We see the relief when someone begins to feel safe again after weeks of uncertainty. The courage it takes to stand, walk or try again after illness. The comfort a familiar routine can bring to someone living with dementia. The pressure families carry when they are making decisions for someone they love. The emotional weight our team members can hold while giving so much of themselves to others.

Mental Health Awareness Week gives us a moment to recognise all of that.

Across our care homes, care at home, rehabilitation and complex care services, and our specialist mental health home, Crest Lodge, mental wellbeing is part of daily life. It is in the welcome someone receives. The time taken to understand what is worrying them. The patience shown on a difficult day. The encouragement that helps confidence return, slowly and in its own time.

Crest Lodge caters specifically to those with mental health needs and is home to a wonderful team that focuses on delivering professional care with respect and dignity. For CHD Living, Creating Happiness Daily means helping life feel a little steadier, a little safer and a little more connected.

This Mental Health Awareness Week, we are thinking about everyone whose wellbeing is shaped by care: residents, clients, families and the team members who support them every day.

Because feeling understood can change everything.

Today, on International Nurses Day, we’d also like to give a very special shoutout to our wonderful Nurse Matron, Judy Lee, at Brownscombe Care Residency.

Judy trained as a nurse at University College Hospital in London. As a newly qualified nurse in 1953, she bravely travelled alone to New York, where she worked at Mount Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.

She later dedicated many years to working part-time as a nurse in a nursing home in Grayshott before retiring at the age of 60. It was so lovely to see Judy recognise herself in this photograph and share memories from such an incredible nursing career.

Today and every day at CHD Living, we celebrate Judy and all the amazing nurses who have devoted their lives to caring for others. Our heartfelt thanks are with you all. 💙
