β Why I'm not worried if A.I will fully replace my job/ profession β
Bit of a random one but recently when having a chat with a client, the subject of A.I and our daily use of it came up. I was asked if I was worried about it getting like Terminator or thought I'd be replaced with a robot one day down the line.
I replied I hadn't really thought much about it taking my job in particular. For many workers out there, this may very well be at some point in the immediate future a reality for them.
They will literally be replaced with a robot. It is happening.
I then had a bit of a think about it. And whilst yes there are massage robots out there, I genuinely don't think one could ever measure up to a human massage therapist, not in a way that would matter enough anyway.
As therapists We do indeed utilise A.I for tasks to make our lives easier, such as administrative reasons or making videos, promotional material for our business etc. However, a robot can never do what I personally do and give all that I do for my profession for a number of reasons.
β Massage / holistic therapy and Reiki requires Human, hands on physical touch and instinct. This touch is comforting and healing. It is built into our primal nature to have contact with other humans, without it we become depressed and our health depletes.
For example, how good does a hug from the right person feel? Someone holding your hand when you're in pain or scared? Someone holding you in Their arms when you don't feel safe? The urge to envelope your favourite person with cuddles when they're sad and stressed? It's in our biological blueprint.
β My job requires Human intuition and real time adjustments of the treatment based on the client's individual needs and ailments. A.I lacks the physical body and tactile feedback needed to pick up what is happening in the client's body or notice subtle physical and emotional cues. If you weren't comfortable having your treatment or got upset with an emotional moment, would a machine notice?
β A big part of my profession isn't just the physical treatment in itself. It is the approach as a whole - the conversations, the laughs the tears. The after care. The open space to talk about anything and everything without judgement and an empathetic listening ear. A Problem shared a problem halved. Sure A.I could give you a generated conversation, but Human connection and energy exchange is non comparable. Most of my clients aren't clients anymore - they're friends and I mean that. Genuine bonds have been made because we've experienced some tough times together!
β Safety is also a bit of a concern for me when it comes to this.
As a therapist I need to make sure both myself and my client are safe above all else. It's taken years of training and experience to do what I do. I make sure this is in the forefront of my mind at all times. Does A.I spot distress or that underlying issue that you're not telling me about but I may pick up on? Would you trust a machine to carry out a treatment on you when you feel vulnerable or have certain medical conditions? Would you open up to a robot about needing help with mental health issues or being stuck in a domestically abusive relationship?
What are your thoughts about it? Do we need real life people in this field of healing and care or would a machine do what we do just as well?
These are just a few reasons!
Keep visiting your human therapists. Whilst of course there are machines out there doing some of the physical treatment adequately backed by science, you can't ever compare to human intuition and connection with a real life person. This is what we're here for.
