Do you know the difference between a podiatrist and a chiropodist? 🤔
If you don't, you're not alone: we get asked this question all the time!
The truth is, there isn't one. 😆
Practices and clinicians generally use the term interchangably, and you will see both commonly used.
👣 Chiropody is an older, predominatly UK based term for the practise of treating feet and their ailments. The word stems from the Greek words 'chiro' (hand) ✋ and 'pod' (foot) 🦶 .
While society has largely dissasociated chiropody from the treatment of the hand, both extremities have historically been treated by the same people due to the similarity in structure.
👣Podiatry, on the other hand, gets its name from the greek words 'pod' (foot) 🦶 and 'iatros' (physician) 👩⚕️ . It was introduced in the UK as an international standard to reflect the advanced training of the physicians who carry it out.
This post is our way of showing support for International Foot Week.
