✨ The news all our clients have been waiting for... ✨

They’re finally here! ❤️

Two weeks ago, these two beautiful girls decided to make an earlier-than-expected arrival and completely stole our hearts.

Introducing Sophie and Phoebe 👶👶❤️

A huge thank you to all of our wonderful clients who have already sent cards, gifts, and kind wishes. We are so grateful, and these lucky little girls are already feeling very loved. ❤️😍❤️

For anyone wondering, please don't worry — the clinic is in amazing hands while Amy enjoys some well-deserved maternity leave. We look forward to seeing you all soon!

Lumbosacral Transitional Vertebra (LTV)

What is LTV?
LTV is a congenital malformation at the lumbosacral junction (L7-S1), where a vertebra takes on mixed characteristics of both the lumbar spine and the sacrum.

While organizations like the OFA and BVA only note LTV as an "incidental finding" on standard hip X-rays, the Finnish Kennel Club (*Suomen Kennelliitto*) has a strict, highly technical scoring system based on a 0–4 scale:
•LTV0 (Normal) - Ideal morphology. 7 distinct lumbar vertebrae and a symmetrical, fully fused sacrum.
•LTV1 (Divided Median Crest) - The bone bodies are fused normally, but there is a mild structural separation between the spinous processes of S1 and S2. Generally clinically silent.
•LTV2 (Symmetrical LTV) - Structural changes are present, but they are identical on both the right and left sides. While stable, it alters normal spinal flexion.
•LTV3 (Asymmetrical LTV) - One side of the vertebra behaves like a lumbar bone, while the other is fused to the pelvis creating an uneven pelvic tilt
•LTV4 (Numerical Variation) - The dog has a transitional shift in count—either 8 lumbar vertebrae (lumbarization) or 6 (sacralization).

The Biomechanical Impact on Structure & Performance:
- Unexplained one-sided hip dysplasia scores due to uneven joint loading
- Early-onset Cauda Equina Syndrome (nerve compression at the lumbosacral junction)
- Recurrent iliopsoas (groin) strains as the core muscles work overtime to stabilize the pelvic tilt
- Sensitivity, hypertonicity or guarding of the spine, dipping the pelvis, dislike being held underneath (increases spinal flexion), or showing irritation when the lower back or sacrum is touched, toweled off, or groomed, low tail carriage
- Loss of drive & extension because the L7-S1 hinge cannot effectively transfer force generated from the hind legs
- Reduced scapula mobility due to the anatomy changes of having 12 rather than 13 ribs (LTV4). Some dogs may also have an extra pair of ribs!

Standard ventrodorsal (belly-up) hip X-rays frequently crop out the upper lumbar spine, completely missing numerical variations (LTV4) or mild symmetry issues. To truly protect your breeding program or sport prospect, ask your vet for extended spinal views, including a laterolateral (side view), to accurately count from T1 down.

The reason for the post is I think this is currently very under diagnosed and overlooked as "just missing a rib", so let's look past the hips and evaluate the whole spine. 🧬🔬

Very proud of local dog trainer and nutritionists Chewing with River. We regularly work together with cases that have pain related behaviour issues to get the very best outcome for the dogs ❤️🐾😍🐾

NOMINATION STORIES 2026 💜 Chewing with River

"I believe Chewing with River deserves to win an award because not only is she an outstanding dog trainer and nutritionist, but she also volunteers her time weekly at a local dog rescue centre for dogs that have had extremely bad starts and experiences to train them and help them regain trust in humans and the world again.

I have used a few local trainers and none compare to Carolina, the amount of time, effort and dedication she puts into each individual client is incomparable. She doesn't just look at the one thing you mentioned she looks at the whole dog's story and has often found other things going on with dogs that others had missed.

Even if this means her missing out on a training session the dog always comes first and being a pawrent of a dog with epilepsy I know how important this is. I'm also disabled myself and she tailors our training so that I'm able to do it even on my difficult days.

She's not a one size fits all trainer. She always posts helpful free tips too on her socials and does q&a sessions for people. She has done quite a few webinars etc that I have also found extremely helpful and has a training journal too. And does all this single-handedly." 💜

Nomination Stories have been chosen at random by the volunteer team from the hundreds of nominations we received this year*. Do keep an eye out as you might just see your nomination story between now and the HBA ceremony in June! 🤩

* Please note that stories may have been trimmed down from the original ones shared on the nomination forms, or may comprise more than one story

🎉🇬🇧WHAT A WEEKEND! 🇬🇧🎉

Reiver Rebels – 43rd at FOWC 2026 🏆

We went into the weekend with two goals:

✅ Beat our placing from the last FOWC
✅ Avoid embarrassing ourselves with silly lights and throwing away races

We’re incredibly proud to be heading home having smashed both!😍

On Sunday, we took an impressive 0.3 seconds off our 16.10s group-stage time and even made use of the ETS to show our potential with a 15.30s run—once our handlers sort their crosses out! 😅

A huge thank you to everyone involved in making it such a fantastic weekend. It was a brilliant showcase of the sport, the community, and the competition. 🤝🏻

It wouldn’t have been possible without the support and maintenance from Taylored Pet Therapies and Pure Balance - Canine Osteopathy & Rehabilitation!

🐾🐾 Clemmy (and now her brother Rufus!) come to us for regular fitness and conditioning sessions to help keep them in peak condition for the show ring. 🏆🐾

Targeted fitness and conditioning work can make a real difference by helping to:

✔️ Build appropriate muscle mass
✔️ Improve muscle tone and strength
✔️ Enhance cardiovascular fitness
✔️ Support healthy weight loss and long-term weight management

Our underwater treadmill is an excellent tool for these sessions (using different water levels, belt speeds and inclines) allowing us to focus on correct movement and gait patterns while taking advantage of the unique properties of water to safely build strength, muscle mass, and overall fitness.

Both Clemmy and Rufus work incredibly hard during their sessions, and it's always a pleasure to see their progress. 💙🐶

If we’ve helped your pet, we’d be so grateful if you could take a moment to leave us a review:
