In a world of complicated fitness plans, the humble walk gets overlooked. For your back, it is one of the best things going.

Walking is gentle, rhythmic, weight-bearing movement that keeps your spine mobile, your joints fed and your muscles working without hammering anything. It lifts your mood, helps your sleep, and needs no kit, no membership and no skill. And unlike a lot of exercise, most people can actually keep it up.

You do not need to march for miles. A regular twenty-minute walk, especially somewhere green or along the seafront, does far more good than most people give it credit for.

People usually come to a chiropractor for one clear thing: a sore back, a stiff neck, a nagging pain. What often surprises them is everything else that quietly improves alongside it.

When your body moves more freely and hurts less, the ripples spread. People often find they sleep a little better, move more because moving is no longer a chore, feel less wound-up, and get back to things they had slowly given up. None of that is magic. It is simply what happens when you stop working around pain and start dealing with it.

The sore back is usually just the reason people come. It is rarely the only thing that gets better.

Everything in nature is easing off right now.

The light is softening, the trees are letting go, the whole landscape is winding down towards rest. Only we seem to expect ourselves to run at the exact same pace all year round.
You are part of nature too, and there is something quietly freeing in letting the season set the tempo.

A little more rest. Earlier nights. Warmer, slower food. Fewer things, done more gently. Slowing down as the year does is not falling behind. It is falling back into rhythm.

See you next week. 🍂

As autumn draws in and the mornings get darker, a lot of people find it harder to wake up, harder to get going, and easier to feel flat.

That is not laziness. It is your body clock responding to less morning light.

Light is the main signal that sets your internal rhythm, so when it arrives later and dimmer, your whole system is slower to switch on.
It helps to be a little deliberate about getting light early: open the curtains the moment you are up, get outside in the first part of the day even when it is grey, and keep your wake time as steady as you can.

Work with the season rather than against it, and the darker months feel a good deal kinder. 🍂

Grounding is easy to love in summer, all bare feet and warm sand.

When the weather turns, it is tempting to file it away until spring. You do not have to. The connection is still there in the colder months, you just reach for it differently.

🌱Rest your bare hands on the soil while you tidy the garden.
🪾Press a palm flat against the bark of a tree on a walk.
🌅Stand at the shoreline and let the sea air do its work.
❄️Even a brisk barefoot minute on the frosty grass counts, if you are brave enough.

The world does not switch off in winter, and neither does the benefit of staying in touch with it.

It feels like the obvious thing to do: your back hurts, so you rest it, lie low and wait for it to settle.

For a very sore day or two that is fine, but as a strategy it often backfires.

Backs are built to move, and prolonged rest tends to leave the surrounding muscles weaker and stiffer, which can drag things out.
Current guidance is to keep gently active where you can: short walks, easy movement, staying as normal as the pain allows.
Rest the worst of a flare if you need to, then coax things back into motion sooner than instinct tells you.

Movement is usually the medicine.

If you want to eat with the season, here is a rough guide to what British early autumn is offering right now.
🍏Fruit: apples, pears, blackberries and plums are at their best.
🥕 Veg: squash and pumpkin, beetroot, carrots, leeks, kale, cabbage, sweetcorn, and the last of the runner beans.

You do not need to overhaul anything. Just let what is in season steer a meal or two this week: a roasted squash, a crumble from local apples, some greens on the side.

Simple, seasonal, and usually cheaper for it.

There is a quiet logic to eating with the seasons that we have mostly forgotten now that every food is on the shelf all year round.
Food grown in its natural season tends to be fresher, tastier and cheaper, because it has not travelled halfway around the world to reach you.

Eating this way also gives you natural variety across the year, nudging you through different fruit and veg as the months turn, rather than the same few on repeat.

It is one of the simplest ways to come back into rhythm with the world around you: eat, roughly, what is growing near you, now.
