Sorry but there is something I need to say that has been trapped for some time now.
Everyone’s screaming about AI like it’s the end of the world. And I have been holding back about speaking up about it.
Those same people are still using petrol or diesel to run their cars, buying from supermarkets, buying from shein/temu/amazon, buying plastic wrapped food, selling things wrapped in plastic, buying plastic products, wearing plastic on themselves or in their home (most textiles are now synthetic and even makeup contains plastics), eating and drinking microplastics daily.
Microplastics have literally been found in human blood, lungs and even placentas. We are not separate from it anymore. So much so that it has been found to be aiding in the decline in fertility and adding to inflammation.
Plastic is everywhere. Plastic is oil. There are wars happening over this stuff.
Also people are being blindsided by ‘biodegradable’ and greenwashing tactics to think they are buying better plastic products, when actually, nothing plastic is green or compostable and never will be. It’s a con to make you think you are buying ‘better’.
Meanwhile, fossil fuels are still the biggest driver of climate change, and deforestation, and industrial agriculture are destroying ecosystems Every. Single. Day.
AI has an environmental impact, yes. But it’s not even close to the main issue that has been here for years, in fact it’s not even in the top 50 of things destroying the planet.
And honestly… for some of us, AI isn’t a luxury or a trend or somewhere to make images.
As someone with ADHD and Autism who struggles to articulate things, make sense of the world, and struggles with day-to-day tasks as simple as cooking, especially when there’s no one around to talk to or ask questions, AI has genuinely been a lifesaver for me as I’m sure it has for many others with disabilities.
So whilst it is good to question things.
Don’t forget to question the bigger picture, and your own behaviours in other areas too.
