It Was Written in the RAMS... But Nobody Was Doing It

You've got the Risk Assessments and Method Statements (RAMS) in place. Everything looks good on paper. But is that what's actually happening on site?

It's something we see more often than you might think.

The RAMS say one thing, but the work is being carried out differently. Maybe a control measure has been overlooked, a shortcut has become normal practice, or the team hasn't properly understood what's expected.

Having RAMS in place doesn't automatically mean the risks are being managed.

They need to reflect the work being carried out, be communicated to those doing the job, and most importantly, be followed.

Does a Fire Risk Assessment Have an Expiry Date? 👀

It's a question we hear quite often. You've had your Fire Risk Assessment completed, so how long is it valid for?

The answer? There's no fixed expiry date.

However, that doesn't mean you can have one completed and forget about it.

Fire Risk Assessments need to be kept under review and updated when necessary, particularly if something changes within your workplace.

🏢 Have you changed the layout of your premises?
👥 Has your workforce grown?
🔧 Have you introduced new equipment or processes?
🚪 Have your escape routes or fire safety arrangements changed?

Your Fire Risk Assessment should reflect your workplace as it is today, not how it looked several years ago.

Who is responsible for fire safety in your business? "The fire risk assessor." No. "The fire extinguisher company." No. "The landlord" — maybe they have responsibilities, but don't assume that means you don't.

For most non-domestic premises, fire safety law places duties on the Responsible Person — that could be an employer, owner, landlord, occupier, or person with control of the premises. There may be more than one.

A fire risk assessor can help you identify and assess the risks — but that doesn't mean you've outsourced responsibility.

Things We Find During PAT Testing

PAT testing isn't just about putting green stickers on plugs. When we're out testing, it's amazing what turns up: damaged cables, cracked plugs, loose connections, tired extension leads, equipment nobody realised was still being used.

People often walk past these things every day — not because they don't care, they've just become used to seeing them.

If something doesn't look safe, don't carry on using it because "it's always been like that." A fresh pair of eyes spots what everyone else has stopped noticing.
