One of the biggest misconceptions about ADHD is that it's just a lack of effort.

In reality, many people with ADHD actually put in enormous amounts of effort every day, even if itโ€™s just to stay organised and manage their responsibilities to keep up with expectations.

Everybody gets anxious about ๐˜ด๐˜ฐ๐˜ฎ๐˜ฆ๐˜ต๐˜ฉ๐˜ช๐˜ฏ๐˜จ. And whenever we get anxious, overthinking can feel productive.

Youโ€™ve probably had times where you replay conversations in your head and imagine all the different outcomes as you try to prepare for every possible eventualityโ€ฆ

The problem is that overthinking rarely gives us certainty.

Instead, it keeps us stuck, focusing on problems that havenโ€™t even happened yet and are often out of our control. Reflection can be incredibly helpful at times, but there comes a point where more thinking doesnโ€™t get you more answers.

Sometimes the healthiest thing we can do is just accept the uncertainty and focus on whatโ€™s in front of us instead.

Not everyoneโ€™s a social butterfly, and for many autistic people, social situations can be far more mentally demanding than they appear on the surface.

Social situations require much more than you might think; you have to process what people say quickly, interpret their tone and body language, and respond in โ€œsocially correctโ€ ways all at the same time - often while managing a whole load of sensory input as well!

You might not spot their difficulty at first. In fact, some autistic people spend years masking so they can fit in, only to eventually become emotionally exhausted.

This doesnโ€™t mean autistic people dislike others or donโ€™t want connection. It just means social interaction requires much more energy and recovery than people realise.

Spending time in the great outdoors wonโ€™t solve everythingโ€ฆ but it can make a huge difference to how we feel!

Sometimes, all it takes is a change of environment to shift your mindset. Add to that a breath of fresh air and some natural light, it can reduce stress and clear your mind, creating some much-needed moments of calm during otherwise busy days.

Even something as simple as a short walk, sitting outside with a coffee, or pausing to step outside and pay attention to your surroundings is enough to help you slow down and reset.

May is and itโ€™s a reminder that looking after your mental health can sometimes be as simple as taking a step through your front door.
