🌡️ **Heatwave Alert – Important Advice for People Living with Diabetes** 🌡️
With high temperatures expected this weekend, it’s especially important to take extra care if you have diabetes. Heat can affect your blood sugar levels, medication, and overall health. Here are some helpful reminders to stay safe:
✅ **Stay hydrated**
Drink plenty of water throughout the day — even if you don’t feel thirsty. Avoid sugary drinks and limit caffeine and alcohol.
✅ **Monitor your blood glucose more often**
Hot weather can cause unpredictable changes in blood sugar levels. Keep a closer eye on your readings and act accordingly.
✅ **Keep medication and insulin cool**
Heat can damage insulin and other medications. Store them according to instructions (usually in a cool place, not direct sunlight).
✅ **Plan your meals and snacks**
Try to keep to your usual routine where possible. Carry healthy snacks if you’re out and about.
✅ **Be mindful of physical activity**
Exercise is important, but avoid the hottest part of the day. Early morning or evening is safer.
✅ **Protect yourself from the sun**
Wear light clothing, a hat, and sunscreen. Heat exhaustion and dehydration can come on quickly.
✅ **Know the warning signs**
Watch for symptoms like dizziness, confusion, excessive sweating or weakness. If you feel unwell, seek medical advice.
✅ **Keep in touch**
Check in with friends, family, or neighbours — and don’t hesitate to ask for help if you need it.
Take care, stay cool, and look after yourselves this weekend 💙
