West Riding & Craven Diabetic Eye Screening Programme We screen in Bradford, Calderdale, Huddersfield, Airedale, Wharfdale & Craven.

We provide Diabetic Eye Screening across the West Riding and Craven district of North and West Yorkshire, to people over the age of 12 who have a diagnosis of diabetes. Diabetic eye disease (retinopathy) is one of the leading causes of preventable sight loss, however in its early stages it has no symptoms and can only be detected through screening.

Shout out to the 750 (give or take) patients who are due or overdue for a Slit Lamp appointment 🫵

We refer you for a Slit Lamp examination (it's basically a big microscope) if for some reason we were unable to fully examine your eyes at a regular Diabetic Eye Screening appointment 👁️

The Slit Lamp appointment may be at a different place to where you normally attend. It's a very important appointment to help protect your sight and it's part of your care 🏥

10 of these children presented with bleeding of the retina. 3 of those will require closer monitoring and 1 was referred to the Eye Hospital 🏥

Diabetic eye disease affects children too. It's one of the most common causes of preventable sight loss 👁️

That's why we screen from age 12. That's why you need to bring your child for screening when invited ❗️

Not bad - but could be better 📈

41 diabetic eye screening appointments were booked in last week (beginning 10 August) at Skipton General Hospital with 33 patients attending, but unfortunately 8 people did not come

Every single appointment is precious.

If you are unable to attend, call 01422 414700 giving as much notice as possible so that someone else can have your slot.

But since diabetic eye disease is one of the most common causes of preventable sight loss (which has no symptoms until it's advanced) we would prefer everyone to attend their appointment when invited. And we can offer support to help you attend - call the number above if you have concerns about screening or if you or your child (aged 12+) are due an appointment.

Just your average reviewing a batch of 15 patients who attended for their eye screening having missed previous appointments 👁️

8 out of 15 were found to have bleeding of the retina - 2 of these will need to be monitored regularly so that the bleed can be managed and treated if necessary 🏥

Retinal bleeding from diabetic eye disease (that's one of the most common causes of sight loss) is normally completely treatable - provided it's caught early 💪

But when you miss appointments you risk the disease progressing to a point where it damages your sight - permanently.
