Fibromyalgia Isn't Psychological (Although Your Mental Health Matters)
🧩 Why was fibromyalgia thought to be "psychological" for so long?
Because it didn't show up in tests. Because the pain was difficult to explain. Because it mostly affected women.
And sadly, when science doesn't know something... it tends to dismiss what it can't understand.
🧠 It was said to be somatization, anxiety, depression, exaggeration.
Even that it was "a way to get attention."
And while it's true that many people with fibromyalgia also suffer from anxiety or depression, that doesn't mean the pain is a product of those conditions.
It's the other way around: untreated chronic pain can profoundly affect mental health.
🔬 What do we know today?
Fibromyalgia is a dysfunction of the central nervous system.
It's not a problem "of the mind," but of how the body processes pain.
The pain threshold drops, alarms go off constantly, and the body becomes trapped in a kind of "storm mode."
Neuroscience has demonstrated alterations in brain regions that interpret pain, sleep, stress, and emotion.
Excessive activation in the sympathetic (alert) system and alterations in neurotransmitters such as serotonin, dopamine, and substance P (key in pain transmission) have been detected.
The body is exhausted, not inventing it.
And this accumulated fatigue can generate confusion, brain fog, hypersensitivity, and a constant feeling of internal threat.
🌱 So... mental health has nothing to do with it?
It does, but not as the sole cause.
Chronic stress, unresolved emotional trauma, or a life lived in alert mode can influence the onset and persistence of fibromyalgia.
But that doesn't mean the pain is "mental."
💡 Thinking that everything is psychological only generates guilt, shame, and isolation.
Understanding that body and mind are deeply connected opens the door to a more humane and effective approach.
