When I was a teenager I loved looking at the fashion illustrations in my parents’ newspaper. I guess this was the beginning of my interest in fashion drawing. My mum cottoned on to my interest and bought me some Victorian fashion prints. Then other members of family and friends gave me some too. Soon I had dozens of them!

But my real love was always for more contemporary fashion illustration - such as work by Gladys Perint-Palmer. In my hallway, just inside the front door, is a limited edition GPP print that I bought in 2019.

In January, on a visit to Edinburgh, I was thrilled to find an original fashion drawing by Gladys Perint-Palmer in Dovecot Gallery. I decided to buy it with money left to me by my dearest fashion loving friend, Jo Kirby, when she prematurely died.

In conversation with GrayMCA gallery about the purchase, Connie said she had two original Veronica Papworth fashion drawings for sale also. This is the artist whose work had intrigued me all those years ago, when I was a teenager. So I bought those as well. I think they make the bedroom very special.

Here’s a breath movement practice for when there’s been a lot going on in your life. Sometimes breathing with very little movement - holding the breath even - can become a habit. Some people habitually breathe like this because they don’t even feel it’s safe to breathe fully - to take up space.

This exercise can be great at shifting the habit. Opening and closing the hands can be practised sitting, but it seems to work better lying down - as in my demo. After a few rounds, people usually inhale as they turn palms up, with fingers stretched out, and then they exhale, as forearms are turned down with fingers curled in. Breathing usually deepens.

We were delighted yesterday to find Wisley looking as fabulous as ever, in spite of the drought. Not so surprising to find the Sub-Tropical garden looking good but the borders and almost elsewhere else were as well! 🎉
We noticed that everywhere was heavily mulched, which would’ve helped a lot.

Does the practice of back bend asana - spinal extension poses, make you more open-hearted and trusting? Whether or not this is so, Body-Mind Centering teacher and Yoga teacher, Amy Matthews, says that we need a heart that can open and close at will. She says that we need to bear in mind that having a heart that’s open all the time, is not a safe strategy anyway and she clarifies this by giving the example of walking around certain parts of New York at night and expecting to be able to trust everyone. So she says we need to cultivate the ability to ‘open and close the heart’ at will. So the heart’s in the right place!

We’ve known each other for quarter of a century now! Topics we cantered around today - How the practice of Astanga Yoga has evolved, Advaita, the meaning of life, having a place to live, having a garden to tend, having someone to dance with, being alone, being in community, Triang Mukhaikapada Paschimottanasana, Eupatorium, Box Caterpillars - not necessarily in that order!

Hydrangeas at their best at the moment! They need water but if it had rained they would’ve flopped and started to go brown. So this is the result of hand watering 🤪
