I was talking with my girls this morning about the programme 'The Demon Headmaster' that I used to watch when I was a kid (anyone remember that one...or am I just showing my age??!!)....anyway, that got us talking about Hypnosis and what it actually is...

My 8 year old daughter was explaining to her sister what hypnosis is and she said "it's like on cartoons when someone has spinny eyes"...

It's no wonder that Hypnobirthing is often misunderstood...the name is misleading and, lets be honest, can put people off!

But the truth is, Hypnobirthing is not like that at all...to start with Hypnobirthing is so much more than just the hypnosis part because it is actually a full birth preparation course and includes the birth process and what you might be able to expect, tools and techniques for pregnancy labour and beyond, information on birth choices and how to get the best out of our maternity system, advise for birth partners and so so much more!

But apart from that, the hypnosis part of hypnobirthing can bring up images of people being out of control, or controlled by someone else....people behaving in very odd ways or pretending to be a chicken!...none of which sound appealing, or helpful!

And, in actual fact, hypnosis is not about being out of control or under someone else's influence...it's not about being asleep....

It IS about being in a deeply relaxed state where our mind is open to positive suggestions...and in this way we can alter the way we feel about birth and labour...and instead of feeling anxious and nervous, wondering if we can even do it, we can teach ourselves to approach birth feeling calm, confident and capable, trusting in our own body to birth our baby.
